Question regarding video content

Hi,

I realize this will be difficult to pinpoint, but I am wondering how many words of text I will need to create approximately 5 minutes of "classroom style" video instruction? Is there a formula that you use to determine how much written content will fill so many minutes of created "classroom style" video?

Thanks,

Scott

There are general "word-per-minute" rates for effective videos of different types, which can range from 90 to 150 words per minute. So for a 5 minute video look to anywhere between 450 and 750 words.

However, it really all depends on other factors, and for you, a - "classroom style" video could have many implications. At least by staying within a reasonable range, you probably won't have a significant drop-off because of it.

To narrow down a good rhythm for yourself, record your audio the way you would like to deliver it, and then count how many words you speak on a per minute basis. That could be used as your guideline. In addition, if you see a video style (perhaps a competitor on Youtube) you would like to emulate, then take down the time of his video, then copy and paste the closed captions of his audio track directly from youtube and count the words of his script.

Either way, this is not something to over think, but more or less do what you feel is comfortable - at least until you get some critical feedback on some actual videos you have made.

Get a textbook and read aloud from it with a timer running. When you hit 5 minutes, count the words you've read up to that point.

That's actually a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Marty,

Thanks so much for the feedback and advice. I like your idea about choosing a video style I'd like to emulate, and pasting the closed captions of the audio track directly from youtube and counting the words of the script.

Like you said though, I think I need to keep from over thinking this...especially at this point in the project. Thanks again for the advice!

Travling guy - Can't believe that idea didn't strike me earlier. Thanks!

Never put a word limit on video's .. I assume you will be outsourcing the work.. just set a time and style. By setting a word limit, the video may not flow as well, because of word limit worries!

      Maddyy,

Yes, I was planning on outsourcing. I think you bring up a valid point...restricting word count could interrupt the flow. I just didn't want the videos to drag on too long and have my viewers lose interest. I suppose if the product is informative and delivered in an entertaining style, I won't have to worry about that.
