Negotiating a Domain Name Sale

Hi Warriors,

I have a dilemma that I'm struggling with, I've been contacted me and asked if I would be interested in selling my domain name.

I would be interested, but I was wondering what would be the best approach to this?

Should I give out the price I'm looking to get or rather ask the potential buyer to make an offer?

In your opinion, what usually works out better?

I would get him to make an offer, then move it forward from there.

Yea get them to make a offer first. I sold a crap domain 2 years ago for 6K. I owned moodentertainment dot com for years, it was a old idea and i never did anything with the domain. I was contacted by someone offering me 1000 bucks, I took my time and finally figured out who was trying to buy my domain because it didn't make sense to me. I finally figured out is was Mood Media wanting my domain, once I figured that out and busted them on it they eventually paid me 6K for it... haha.. They were trying to hide their identity form me, I guess they figured I'd squeeze um if I knew, and they were right...

Use escrow.com to do the transaction.

Hi m00d, thank you for posting that - this is a similar situation actually.

The potential buyer is in the same market, but they aren't shy and emailed me with their company email, signature on the email etc. It actually appears that this is the company director

I have a certain price in mind - a large number, but maybe this potential buyer will offer a higher price and that is what is making me lean towards letting them make the offer as everyone has suggested.

If they contacted you, then you have the power. They want the domain more than you need to sell it. If you are happy to walk away if you dont get a sale, I would say let them make an offer, then tell them your price and dont move from it. If they want it badly enough they'll buy.

Im assuming that your offer is realistic!?

        LOL! That's classic!

I've never had any luck with selling domain names - even when I've thought I had the upper hand. Owned a foreign corporation's domain once and even got on the phone with the company's marketing director. In the end I scared em away with my outrageous 6-Figure asking price

Yep...they should make an offer which will be lower than what they are willing to pay. Go from there depending what the offer is.

First off, if they ask you to get an appraisal first, and offer you a pretty high figure for the domain ... run. Don't even answer back. It's called the domain appraisal scam and they will insist that you get the appraisal at one or two sites (that they own). Once you purchase the appraisal, they will disappear and no longer be interested in your domain.

If it's a real offer, give them a high number. Make sure it's what you want, plus some. If they want the domain, they will counter offer. Take it from there.

If you are using the domain, the domain must have some extra value. You must be making some money with it. Give him a idea that "I am making $xxxx amount of money per month using this domain in my website. So, I would like to get an offer from you if you are really interested."

I hope, this will accelerate the discussion in an useful one.

Herb Cohen has a great strategy in his book Negotiate This! Book Excerpt: Negotiate This!: By Caring, But Not T-H-A-T Much

    Ask an astronomical crazy figure.
Wait for the other party to baulk, and say 'we're not paying that much'
Ask what was the maximum budget is that they have.
They will always return with the maximum figure they were going to pay.

Always be prepared to walk away if it's not what you want. 'meh I like your offer.... but not that much...'

If its a money making domain name then and It's working for you, then ask them for a sum that includes the money that the domain will make for the next 6 to 9 months and an additional domain name fee like if you domain is "onlinemoney" I would ask for 500000$ .

If its a non monetized domain then you can ask on forum for on appraisal or simply ask then the amount of money you think the domain worth.

Never ask the buyer how much he will pay for something because you will lose money.
