Online Money: Where Do I Start?

Of course this is just tested opinion here but ...

I suggest starting with a hungry market. Let that market decide your product.

All too often people pick a product and then find out they need to get traffic to the offer. If they had found the niche first, everything else is more likely to fall in place.

Traffic can be a rather hard thing to come by if you have never done this before. Traffic is so precious a lot of us here are dedicated to capturing that traffic and treating them very well. Actually giving that traffic stuff they would buy just to keep them happy.

May I suggest.

Find a forum dedicated to something you are interested in. Research the market. Find what they are willing to pay for. Give them a taste for free. Sell them what they want.

List Building to affiliate offer until you can create your own product (if you do not already have one)

How do you know a forum has enough traffic to make all this worth the time and effort? Does your advice apply to other niches outside of IM?

I would first check if there are lots of existing products available in the niche.
Then go find the busiest forum in that niche.

lots of products + busiest forum, think warrior forum.

I suggest drilling down far enough that a lot of people are still talking about it but having a shortage of products that actually fix a problem or create a solution.

to build your confidence in finding a profitable niche try this:

      1. Visit Amazon or dummies.com and see if a dummy book exists for your niche
      2. do a simple google search for your niche + forum, see how many forums are out there. More you find the better
      3. Go to clickbank and see if you can't find at least 3 info products with gravity of 7 or more.
      4. visit Facebook and see if you can't do a search for your niche and find numerous pages with lots of people sharing info.
      5. visit Facebook ads and creat a dummy Ad. See if cant reach a couple hundred thousand people or more in your niche..

If your niche can pass through this filter than there's a great chance you have a good niche

This is good advice BUT I'm in a niche where NONE of that applies and it's great for me. There's pretty much nothing on Amazon about it and the stuff that is doesn't have many sales, there are a couple of forums loosely related, maybe 1 or 2 bad products on Clickbank, I think a single Facebook group that's not very active...still works out great for me because I am knowledgeable and passionate about that niche and by being involved in it I can see opportunities where many other's can't.

I whole heatedly agree that my filter is NOT the end all be all to niche selection. Like most things in This trade there are 10 million ways to do things and every buddy has their take on it.

If your stuck finding a niche and you want to break into something with a bit more confidence then My way is a pretty good start...

At the bottom of every forum there are traffic stats. It tells you how many registered users there are, who's on right now, and when there was the most users ever online. Some forums like this one, even tell you who's viewing which subforum and how many are there.

Member count is a good indicator but member participation does it for me.

The further outside the IM niche you can get the easier lol.

Yeah I agree for a newbie who's not sure whether the niche they've found is profitable your method is a good one my point was that just because none of that is present doesn't mean there's no $$$ be made.

List building is the way to go. It can have some twist and turns few will warn you about but like most business models .. learn it well and it will treat you well.

      GOOD LUCK!

Once you have a good niche to start, I suggest you to go to Amazon.com and see what product is hot right now by looking at their top product. It is a simple market research to know whether your assumed good niche is really sell in the real world. Checking a popular forum about what is on trend is not sufficient, because only a few people with that same hobby is tech savvy enough to join a internet forum.

there are many that are much more qualified than I am to answer your question. I have a strong background in business/marketing but I am weak on the tech know how. In my opinion a great word for newbies to learn is "outsourcing"

If you can afford to spend a few bucks outsource the work that you are not knowledgeable about. this will save you a huge amount of time and you will also learn from the finished products that others have done for you.

If you have a general idea of something why struggle for months to build a site yourself when someone else can do it in 3 days? you will then learn from what they have done and you can move on learning how to market your site instead of being stuck on step 1. Just a thought..

      Wouldn't getting a computer be step 1

      -----

People are asking how do you know if a forum is popular or not, well that is simple, number of threads and posts. Just go into the main forum and see how many posts they are getting each day, each reply will have a date on it so it tells you exactly how active it is. Look at this forum, it has like 3-4 pages of threads a day, look for similar signs (Doesn't need to be loads of threads, just frequent posting.

Are you making good money doing this?

I would think there would be resistance from mods that don't want you pushing stuff in threads all the time. If threads on a forum average 200 views, have a x% CTR and then x% conversion rate, the math says that you'd have to be a prolific self promoter. The forum would need to have very liberal rules for you to get away with that.

True, but the way I go about it is to just include a link to my blog, which most forums are fine with even if there's a post limit before you can include a link.

That's where the interaction begins for me, and I find it a far better way to kick things off rather than pushing links to products. I wouldn't click on em, so I dont adopt that method.

Better to start as you mean to go on. Be ethical, honest and if you provide enough value to you niche audience the sales will come.

      All the best!
