"Internet Marketing" epiphany...

Hey Everyone - I had a strange epiphany yesterday. But before I share what that was, let me tell you this…

I have been working really hard on my websites for the last few months. Going at it with everything I got. Emotionally bouncing back and forth from Excited to Frustrated to Curious and then back to Excited again. I haven’t been getting consistent sales from the products we spent a ton of time creating. But I’m studying more every day and working hard every day in hopes that I can tweak everything enough to make consistent income.

Just randomly yesterday though I came across some written notes I took when I created 2 kind of crappy YouTube videos about 6 months ago (before I had even decided to go after Internet Marketing full time). I saw my login info and decided to login see what was going on.

To my surprise I got 10 subscribers and lots of positive comments on the videos. All Thumbs Up also – No Thumbs down. 10 subscribers on 2 (very average) videos of me talking! I was very surprised as I just posted the videos and forgot about them.

And the 2 videos were “self-help” related, which is not even a niche that I am in! (But I read a lot of self-help stuff).

I don’t know… Seeing those positive comments people had to say felt really good. It just got me thinking… A lot. Things like:

-Find an audience before creating a product.

-Maybe I shouldn’t be spending 14 hours a day in front of my computer. Maybe I would be better off working on my speaking skills and my “presence”.

-Reading the positive comments really made me feel like I was adding value to the marketplace. Not just trying to drive traffic and make a sale. I got back that positive entrepreneur zest that slips away from me sometimes.

-Maybe I should take over the world?

No real reason for posting this… Just sharing, since no one else in my life understands what “Internet Marketing” even is. Thanks for listening.

Congrats man and keep pushing forward with what ever excites you. Every entrepreneur experiences this at some point but you learn how to over come those psychological barriers.

    Goodluck!

    Hi Nathan,

You incidentally learn a well-hidden truth in Internet Marketing.
Internet Marketing is an entrepreneurial journey.
Everyone has his unique way to successful business.
You need to feel it yourself.
Two can sell the same product but yet achieve very difference results.

There is no magic pill. Work hard and identify your own business model.
I can see a successful marketer in the making.

    All the best!!

I've always been under the thought process that selling a product for $1 is better? That way it builds a buyers list instead of just a subscribers list which would be more powerful...

You know what they say "a buyer is a buyer is a buyer!"

Do both. Offer a freebie to entice people who aren't ready to buy onto your list, also have a $1 or low priced product that you sell and use this as an upsell / OTO to get people off the freebie list onto a buyers list.

Market the $1 product to the freebie list, once they've bought they get added to the buyers list, start to promote higher priced products to the buyers list. Continually move them up the funnel based on what they spend. There's little point in offering $2000 coaching to someone who hasn't even spent $1 with you yet.

    Hey Nathan,

It is true internet marketing is a long journey and only through trial and testing will you see start seeing success.

I believe what you said about finding an audience before creating an product is huge!

Many successful people build a network (list of people) in a Profitable niche before they even know what they are going to sell. People tend to think a business is a product. WRONG!

    A business is ...

    Not a website
    Not a product

A business is CUSTOMERS. In order to have a successful business work on creating a list and building a relationship with them. Then you can start selling your own products left and right - and have a true business

Your not alone there, rest assured.

Just imagine the day everything 'clicks' and you start pulling 5-6 figures every month, you can bet everyone in your life will start (or at least be wanting to) become more understanding of IM then.

I think you are entirely on the right track.
Taking over the world would probably be hugely profitable.
    I would go for it.
Just think of the number of copies of WSOs you could sell , if you take over and in the process learned the ups and downs and ins and outs and write a report on it.
    You would make a ton.
Epihanys are great, more power to you.

Absolutely! The main niche I'm going after right now is Photography. Specifically photography for stay-at-home-moms. My wife is a very successful photographer. My market research was every time we saw friends, another female was asking her how to get started with photography. I know, for sure, the demand is there. But so far they haven't wanted to spend money on it. (I'm still working on that.)

That's what I keep telling myself! I work harder than anyone else I personally know (and somehow I seem to be happier also). I know my efforts will pay off. Thanks for the encouragement Art!

Nathan, I just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. It helped answer a couple of questions I've been asking myself for a while now.

-Maybe I should take over the world?
Good idea. We should do a JV on this one. We'll do it with cat pictures and overused memes.

Youtube is the reason I wrote and sold my first ebook.

And my process was exactly the same as yours.

I happened to make 1 random video about a niche I happened to know a lot about, but wasn't interested in selling anything to (the thought never even passed my mind).

I came back a few months later and noticed comments like crazy, and about 30 messages in my inbox.

One of those messages was from a guy offering me $50 to write him a book, to explain how I did what I did (it wasn't money making but health related).

So I decided to capitalize on that video.

I wrote the ebook, then ordered a fiver gig to promote the video for 2 months.

Came back, and what do you know? More crazy offers from people looking for more information. Apparently I hit on some type of untapped niche.

So I set up a site, put the ebook on it, and started sending people to the site.

Then I started posting the same type of info on niche related forums, and eventually began making more sales.

It was probably the easiest money I've ever made w/out really trying.

But you are definitely right. Find an audience with a need thats not being met, or is being met the wrong way, do them a huge favor, and they will do you a favor in return (without even knowing it).
