Question about ClickBank's activation fee

I see ClickBank has a $49.95 product activation fee, but I'm unsure if it only applies when you want to have your product listed in the marketplace or not. If I want to use ClickBank as a payment processor only and not have affiliates promoting my product, do I still need to pay the activation fee?

Thanks.

Yes; you need it to be activated, regardless of who's promoting it, if you want ClickBank to retail the product.

ClickBank is not "a payment processor only" (like PayPal is). It's a retailer. "Your" customers there actually buy the product from ClickBank, not from you. That's what happens whether you, or an affiliate, generate the sale.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

My plan is to buy a PLR ebook and freshen it up a bit, new cover, etc, and sell it as an OTO for $7. I also want buyers to be able to pay with PayPal, but I don't want to use my own PayPal account. It seemed like ClickBank was perfect for this, if it wasn't for this high entry fee. 2checkout is also able to do this, but they are very strict on what they accept. Are there any other solutions that don't use my PayPal account?

I have been using CB for years now for all my ebooks and I really cant fault them and its very good for your OTO's.

No, it's just to activate the product to allow it to be sold through Clickbank.

      Simple as that.

Right, I've never been a vendor on there, just an affiliate. Is that just a one time fee and anybody can promote it from the marketplace?

Yes one time fee per product that you want to promote and your product forever stay there and affiliate will come to promote your products.

There's no fee to be an affiliate.

The setup fee is for vendors (using ClickBank DIY) one time, plus that they $1 plus 7.5% of each transaction.

Here is a summary of the different types of ClickBank accounts.

I understand, I've been a Clickbank affiliate for over 5 years, I've just never been a vendor and wasn't sure without looking on Clickbank of the fees. Anyway, $50 is nothing if you have a good product that sells.

My reasoning is that since it's just going to be a PLR with a facelift, and not a unique or original product, it's probably best not to list it in the marketplace.

I don't know whether you can not list it in the Marketplace (I'm guessing that you can). I guarantee that Harvey will know this, anyway. You can certainly choose to "whitelist" affiliates and then simply not accept any (though setting the affiliate commission to 1% will probably serve the same purpose!).

Well ... "good luck with that", as the saying goes: you may possibly find that you have to freshen it up a lot, for ClickBank to accept it. I'm not a vendor and have no experience of that. It's not quite as easy to get products accepted there as it used to be.

Yes, certainly. That makes sense if you don't mind paying them 7.5% + $1 per sale. (For a $7 product, that "+$1 is pretty significant, isn't it?!).

Yes, they have that facility, also. Hmmm ... you may be right, but I'm certainly not aware that they're any more selective than ClickBank is.

Yes ... Plimus (actually they're now called Bluesnap), Fastspring, and maybe others, can accept customers' payments by PayPal (obviously essential) without the vendor/merchant needing to use his own PayPal account.

It wouldn't be, if he doesn't want to use his PayPal account to receive the money, surely? Which is his "starting position" and his reason for looking at ClickBank ...

I bet Click Bank make a pretty penny for all those activation fees.

It's a shame because the little guys and gals, just setting up in the IM business, might not be able to afford it.

But that's the way it goes!

Call me callous, but I look at it differently. From my perspective, someone who can't afford $50 shouldn't really be trying to set up any kind of "business" at all. Even in countries where $10 is a full day's pay, $50 is hardly a fortune to spend on setting up a business.

Financially, the entry barriers involved in online business are almost incredibly low.

It's not surprising the alleged failure-rate is so high, if people are setting up "businesses" at times that they can't afford $50.

        Yes, Alexa, that's true.

But people living in third word, ahem developing countries, $50 might be a lot to them. Whereas without spending that money, they could invest in other things. Things that would allow their business to grow.

I am not talking about developing a $1,000 a day business, but even $5 a day to people in the developing world can be a life-changer.

I know, I have been to such places.

Sadly, when Plimus changed to BlueSnap they made it so that you have to use your own PayPal account if you want it to be a payment option. I didn't know about Fastspring, though. I'm gonna look further into it because it looks very interesting.

Yes, JVZoo uses your PayPal account, and so does RapBank, e-junkie, PayGear, PayDotCom and some others.

The other side of that coin is that the money people earn in third world countries is worth way much more to them than it is to us in developed countries. Some third world countries you could probably feed yourself for a week+ from the sale of one ebook. In developed countries you'd be lucky to feed yourself for one day.

So the payment you need to make might be a bigger deal to you but so are the profits you make.

There were 12,327 vendors listed in the marketplace yesterday. Let's say there are 20,000 people who've paid clickbank $50.

That's only $1 million, over the last 14 years.

Meanwhile ClickBank have paid their affiliates more than $2 billion over the last 10 years. Since ClickBank's transaction fees are probably approaching 10% (7.5% + $1), they've probably made more than $200,000,000 from them.

The activation fees are a relative drop in the ocean. I wouldn't be surprised if they only have them to deter time-wasters from using up their staff resources.
