Market Samuri and Google results don't match

Hi, just getting off the ground with this whole IM thing. Any help is hugely appreciated!

One point of confusion for me as I'm going through some how to videos :

When I plug a keyword in to Market Samuri's SEO Competition area, it pops out the supposed top 10 google rankings for that keyword. correct? In the example of "weekend trips" I included, it's a bunch of magazine and newspaper articles.

But when I google the same term, the results on the first page don't match at all. It's all the blogs and commercial sites, etc.

Why the discrepancy? Is the top 10 results in MS not what I think it is? Are my search settings throwing things off? Is it a regional thing?

Thanks!

Google are, more and more, putting up results that are based on your browser's IP - which makes many types of search throw up quite location specific results.

In my case, coming from the UK, if I search on "Weekend trips" I get a page of UK sites.

Market Samurai, on the other hand, seems to get its results from whichever Google server you have specified, with the default, I believe, being the US. As Google won't take notice of the geo-location by IP when MS requests data, there is bound to be a discrepancy.

In any case, the results that Google give in real time to real searchers may not be the same as the data they provide to companies like Market Samurai.

      Thanks Martin, that makes sense.

That being the case, how do I know who I am truly "up" against when it comes to assesing my niche competition? That is, I asses the top 10 on MS and think I can rank, but the "real time, real search" google rank results for that niche are something completely different.

How do I really know who my competition is?

You can use a search tool the sends your search to Google while stripping any personal identifying information. This I just found by Google:

    https://startpage.com/

MS does give you "real time, real search" because it queries Google "live" when you are using MS.

Personally, I have never seen a big difference between what I see in MS and what I see in Google and I don't do any "hiding" to neutralize Google's results.

You can also try Traffic Travis. You only need the free vesion for their SEO Competition feature. Though I see the same results as I see in MS.
