Ok, thanks to the help of all you good folks I figured out the RSS feed. But, I was wondering how often do you submit your feed from your site to the directories? For instance, once it's done is it done or do you need to submit it each time you update? I know it's a simple question but I honestly don't know. Thanks in advance! |

Your feed is automatically pinged if you use blogs when ever you make a post. However, it's advisable to use a plugin that sets the periods in which the feed is pinged, ie, every 24hrs ONLY if new posts are to be pinged. If no new posts are made, then it will not ping your feed. The person above my post is incorrect, you ping your feed only when new posts are made. Unless of course you have a feedburner account which will automatically ping your feed if you have the ping feature turned off in your wordpress install, after each post. |

think of a ping as getting back links. your rss feed is placed on several rss feed aggregators (is that spelt right? ) then the search engine bots come over and crawl those pages and heads over to your links for indexing ![]() |

Use Feedping or pingomatic to ping your feeds if you are worried they are not up to date. Submit once and ping once like every week if you want.

Hi there, I am a little confused by your post. It's not the "feed" itself you are submitting, it's the Blog address where the feed is appearing isn't it ? Anyway something else you may wish to consider is feeding your "last couple of blog posts" through to a "Squidoo lens" And "adding" Twitter widgets to your websites/blogs. Aaron Riddell |

That's the technical term, gee Intrepreneur. Submitting your rss feed is referred to as PINGING! I know what I'm talking about, been doing this stuff a lot longer than you. So please, try to get your "opinions" correct when you're trying to give advice. ![]() |

Submitting your feed and pinging are two different things: When submitting your feed to directories, it has nothing to do with pinging... submitting your feed is like submitting your URL/website, to directories... pinging is updating your site/page/blog after you have posted a new post. Jamie [EDIT] To expand on that... You only need to submit your feed once, it is the pinging that you do after each time you post! [END EDIT] | |

No I'm not incorrect! Placing a link in your signature is a ping. Placing a rss feed on a rss feed directory is a ping. Any kind of backlink is a ping. You're seeking the bots to come out and hit your link for crawling. If you've seen a ping service in action, you will know that it sends out your url to loads of services. if you check these services you will notice about 50-100 links per page and then they quickly disappear on to another page. Since these pages are updated with content regularly, google loves it, any search engine for that matter. they crawl these pages and since these search engine bots can crawl millions of pages in seconds, it doesn't take long for them to find all those links of which are new ready to be crawled and processed for indexing or updating of an existing page. Same goes for video sites, before google went to nofollow on links you place in the description, Traffic Geyser, had a service where you could send out your video, plus link, plus description out to loads of video directories. This is essentially a video ping, same thing. Bots come over to see those high end traffic sites that get heaps of content, bots crawl over to see the new links, and processes it for indexing, or updating of an existing page. |

Actually, you're both right. But, Jamie makes the point I was going to make. There are two different ways to ping. One is when you post, the other is submitting your feed to an RSS directory. And, Loz is right, every time you 'jiggle the net' that's a ping too, like making a post to your blog. I was very confused by this too.
