Searching for data on Color Preference

Not finding much data about online color preferences, using a Google search. Of course my main interest is web page color schemes - but anything on the popularity of different hues would be very welcome.

My best find so far is on interior paint colors, although the survey question was more generic than just about walls:

Thanks All!

It is different in every industry. For example cars for the last couple years most popular color is white.

I think for websites, the biggest concern is readability not color scheme per say. The only reason why I feel that way is there are some very popular tech websites with some god awful coloring.

hahha.. Really I never heard before that people even think about color that much and does it even depends on sale of your product or services . Seriously I am a designer and SEO service provider and I am here for a long time and earned good money but for color I just choose what I like its not like white for cars website and black for shoes website hahaha sounds crazy to me.. really sorry..

P.S. whenever I go to purchase any product I do not really care much about color of the site as much I care about their features and the site atleast should not look scam site.

In marketing and in website development particularly, there are two aspects to color that you should consider.

The first aspect is color balance. The colors that you use for your website or promotional materials should appear integrated. In other words, they should look like they go together. The way you accomplish this is with a color wheel. This site will help.

You start by choosing the main color for the site. The color wheel then shows you the colors that harmonize. Use the complementary color, or colors near the complementary color, as these will look coherent. The largest area of color should be your main color, and the complementary colors should be smaller areas.

When you get farther from the complementary colors, triads for instance, you should use them just in small areas as accents.

The second aspect is the human response to color. This has been studied fairly extensively. People tend to have emotional responses which vary depending on the color they are viewing. So for example, you might choose red for your website as it tends to be associated with impulse buying.

There is more on this subject here and here.

Thanks for the resources Dan! Another thing I do is to visit the sites in my niche that are run by large corporations and companies that have lots of money to sink into research. I look for sites that have been online for several years - they have usually tested color and design. That can give you a good indication of what is "selling" in a particular niche.

The "in" colors are decided a year or two in advance so that designers are on the same page. Interior design and fashion lead the way, but it bleeds over to the internet.

Right now you can't go wrong with washed out earth tones highlighted with something a little brighter. About a year from now it'll be similar colors, but a bit more bold, darker. So you may want to stay ahead of the curve some.

Don't buy into the myth of color in sales psychology. If there was any truth to it then everyone would be using the same colors and they would never ever change. It's just about picking the right color scheme for your design while staying within the boundaries of relevant colors.

It may or may not be a myth. You haven't offered evidence one way or the other. But your conclusion ("...then everyone would be using the same colors and they would never change...") does not follow from your premise ("...If there was any truth to it...")

      And then this:

Just how would one pick "the right color scheme" in your opinion?

For those who don't think color is important - I urge you to review this video of 5 aspects of color use, split tested and giving improvements in conversions of 13% to 88%. Not all these improvements were only color changes, but some are and color was a major issue in the others.
    How website colors impact conversion

I also have a freebie report on Color Schemes, with over 30 Color Scheme diagrams and some example pages: Free to Warriors only - please don't share with others.

If you like to work with color wheels, I recommend an interactive color wheel tool called "Color Schemer" - no, I'm not an affiliate.

And those of you interested in color might not know about "Color Trees" (3D color wheels pioneered by Edward Munsell). Here's a 3D model of a Munsell Color Tree I made:

    Hope this helps...
