New direct response marketing tv show, have you seen it?

Hi everyone,

I just watched the first episode of a new show
on Discovery channel called pitchmen.

It stars the infomercial spokesman Billy Mays and
Sully.

It basically shows you a behind the scenes look at
inventors trying to get their products on tv and have
them pitched by Billy or Sully.

I think marketers can learn alot from watching this.
They show the thought process, perceived value
and price point discussions.

They show the filming of the infomercials which
is very interesting and might give you some ideas
on filming your videos for your sales pages etc.

Anyways, thought some of you might like to
know about it.

Here's the link to the website which shows the
dates and times of the broadcast schedule.

Pitchmen : Discovery Channel

I'd be interested to hear what any of you think of it.

There was a little discussion of it earlier in the Off Topic forum: http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...show-ever.html

I hope there will be another flurry of discussion when people see the next episode.

    Regards,
    Allen

I watched it too and it was very interesting from a marketing point of view. A number of things can be adapted from it to fit the online marketing world too.

...and it's pretty entertaining too yet.

Didn't see it... Dam. Did the guy with the insoles fair out well? He mortgaged his house and it foreclosed. Just wondering how his TV spots went.

      Mike,

I didn't see the whole show, but at the end of the program it stated that he was no longer being represented by the marketing company but was now selling the units on his own.

As someone who spent a little time in that industry I can tell you that is not a good thing.

I'm going to make a point to see the next show, not only because I like train wrecks, but also to see if they portray that industry as it is, or as they think the public will buy into the *drama* of it all.

        Hey KJ,

Actually, the info you saw at the end was referring to the guy with
the GPS Pal product. He's the one trying to sell them on his own because
they couldn't find a good price point or enough interest on the promotions.
(That was interesting because Billy said that one didn't have the WOW factor.)

Mike..The partners with the insoles did very well. I think they made back
something like 3-4 dollars for every dollar spent on media time. They said
so far the sales was something like 4 million and now they caught the
interest of the medical field, so big bucks coming.

They air the replays once or twice per week if you miss an episode.

          Hey Kenneth,

Thanks for posting that. I wasn't aware that there had been more than one product featured on the show.

And as you said, I did hear them mention that they got a return of $4.00 for every $1.00 in adspend (I'm paraphrasing here) and that really had me confused (more than normal ) because that is a home run.

For those that may be curious, the threshold for success, the point at which you know you have a winner is $1.70 back for every $1.00 of adspend. $4.00 is well above that mark.

Now, where's that TV Guide. I hope it's not lining the birdcage again. Those dang seed leftovers always fall into my popcorn and make it taste funny. The texture is nothing to write home about, either. Go figure...

          Thanks,

          KJ
