Poll in the welcome email?

I'm looking to provide a more personnal approach to my subs so I can bring them the value they are looking for.
I'm thinking of including a link to an online poll (that I would have edited to my niche of course!) in the first email of the series; the welcome email.
I would ask them to go fill out the poll so I can pin point their needs.

What do you think of this?

As any of you tried this technique before?.....Was it helpful?

I have not done this, but I think that's a neat idea.

Shows that you care about them...right off the bat.

    I say go for it!

Sounds like a good idea...the only way you'll know for sure is if you test it out and see! :-)

What is your favourite online poll to use with your subs?

I would probably use the first couple of emails to allow them to get to know you. Let them know a little about your story and your background. Then hit them with a survey framed as you wanting to help them as best as possible.

Mmmm....That's sounds very good instead of having the poll in the first email.

Asking them to click on a link in the very first email might annoy some of them!

Try it, but it can be difficult to get answers from a poll in my experience. You might have to bribe them with something in order to get them to answer the poll.

How would you set that up?

You tell them that the ones that click the link and do the poll gets a "present"?

Not sure I'm "techi" (unsure about the writing of this!) yet to know how to do this

Good idea, but it is rather weird and difficult to ask them "hey, so what do you need from me?" I suggest you to tell them a statistic that internet can fulfill their needs. start by asking them a general poll, and don't be too specific. and don't make them click too much. you just want a result from the poll, maybe less than 3 click is enough.
    1. click a poll link in their email
    2. click their options, say thank you
    3. done

more than that, they will be suspicious

A really non-techie way off the top of my head would be to put a URL on the page that has the poll that they can click on to receive their gift. You can put it at the end and hope that they don't scroll all the way down just to get it. And you also have to hope they don't just put B.S answers just to submit "something" so they feel OK about getting the gift. Polling is tricky

    Just my opinion...

I wouldn't give you my valuable time without you first giving me a good reason to do so. I think it's pushy, and can back fire very easily. Now, if I signed up to your list for a free report and it was a quality report, then I may feel obligated to help you out by answering some questions. Other than that, I have absolutely no reason to give you something for nothing.

I gave you my email in exchange for a report, but now you want more from me. Sorry, for all I know your report is probably going to waste my time. Let's face it, most of the freebies we download never get fully read. If you ask me, you're assuming I have nothing better to do than to help you out. But, you have to prove your worth before I give you any of my time.

Just my opinion though. You could easily get some good data from this approach, but just as easily you can come across as the person who expects me to jump through hoops for you when it should be the other way round. Earn my trust and I may do anything you ask (within reason) but until then, prove to me that I didn't just give my email to one of the 90% of marketers out there who do nothing more than waste my time.

Hope that didn't sound too stern

Will make sure to first introduce myself and earn their trust with value packed emails (3-4 emails I guess) and then introduce the poll explaining them it's to better serve them....Hopefully they'll think I'm not part of the bad 90%!

I'm actually implementing something similar to what you are doing. It's important to figure out the main problem that your subscribers have and touching base on each on individually is something that hasn't been tested properly.

Considering that I have actually had subscribers reply back with problems, I would say that it has been pretty successful (not saying I have made any kind of money officially).

That's great!...your subs actually took time to fill out the poll.

When I was asking if you got good results I was not thinking money wise.

But for sure if you pin point their problems and are able to provide the solution, I guess money's not too far!

well, I hope your poll plan is already backed up with a lot of valuable report first. people give out their email address realize that they are a subject of sales, but it doesn't mean they will just abruptly opt out if you push them. the trick to make it work is pushing them only a little bit, but backed up by offering them valuable report first, maybe five or more.

tl;dr : any subscriber who contribute to the poll will get additional special report

        Actually it's in the making.

I want to start in a new niche and try it differently than what I've been doing so far.

I'm trying to get everything figured out to the best I can, so I get a top sales funnel

I put it in email 2. I say it helps us both if they answer because that way they get the best possible content suited to their needs if they tell me what it is they are looking for and how often they want to hear from me.
