I need your opinion.....

I'm building a site. I want to add the "Invite Friends" module that allows the user to grant access to their email account. But I'm just debating if I should have this as part of the signup process or if I should just have it as a feature in the users account. The sign up process requires the user to already go threw a few steps, so to add one more I fear might turn some people off. But at the same time to get access to there email account could be extremely valuable. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The options I can think of are:
1) add it to the sign up process
2) add it just as a feature in the users account
3) both

Personally, I wouldn't invite my friends to a site that I wasn't pretty familiar with first. If it was required part of the signup process I would leave rather than do it.

I'd say it depends on your relationship with the people signing up, but if they don't know you very well it's probably better left out of that step and offered later.

  • Aceshigh888,

I agree with natf. If a website that I am just discovering is asking for access to my email account the red flags immediately go up. I may not be the best example but I think in general when you ask for too much up front, you end up losing visitors. What about some kind of prompt later on once they have been on the site for a little bit? I would just make it a feature for now.

Alternatively, you could implement both scenarios and track how visitors behave. There are a list of tools in this post,

I would also agree with the two people above me. At the time of the registration, trust can be a very fickel and fragile thing. They may have been convinced by your sales pitch or the content of your website, but that is only likely to last until they see some sign of trouble. If you wantaccess to their e-mail account, they are likely to snap out of their bubble of positivity and look at your website, more critically and skeptically. Now, I will also link you to a webpage that is not completely relevant to your question, but should help you to improve your outlook on how to gain registrators.

hmmmm ya good idea. ahhhh I'll have to put some thought into this. CRAP I see your point...but linked in sure has a slick way of accessing their sign ups email accounts. They prompt you like a gazillion times. But that's linkedin so everyone's heard of them. some unknown sight might seem to scary for new users.
