Paypal - Your Account Has Been Limited! NOT!

So I got this email today. A quick check with PP just to confirm it's fake.

According to PP, they will always use your first and last name or the business name associated with your account.

This thing looks real and has PP address, logo and website but the update button resolves to globaldovale.com.br which also looks very real.

Heads up!

If I had a pound (even a dollar would do) for every time I received that fake email, I would be retired and living somewhere extremely sunny.

A quick check to begin with - PayPal emails always address you by your name, not "Customer" or other generic words.

Then, of course, you should always check that the links do lead to PayPal.com. Better still, don't click any links and log in using a browser bookmark. You can be sure that if your account has been limited, it will be VERY obvious when you get into your account.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I've never gotten one in five years with PP.

      Guess I'm being redundant.

I get them too. It's pretty common I guess unfortunately. I called Paypal the first time just to make sure they didn't need any more information from me and everything was cool with my account. They said everything was fine. Since then I just ignore them.

I've found that paypal usually calls me when they need something. They did that when they needed me to put my social in. They just called and ask, I gave it and it was done.

    Umm....

But srsly this scam is sooooo 2008.

OBVIOUSLY, the real PP will address you by your full name and not by "Dear Costumer" "Dear Member" etc. Just like any other bank.

If you fall for this in this day and age, then there is a Nigerian prince waiting, who wants to send you 10000000$.

UPD: Oh, and the real PP always has a green check mark next to every email, and it NEVER appears in a spam folder...just sayin

If PayPal didn't limit so many accounts for all types of reasons this wouldn't be so believable.

Lost of people win the lottery, it still doesn't mean I fall for lottery emails from Nigeria. A bit of common sense needs to come into play here.

We have had it beaten into us the last few years that if you receive an email like that you go and login to your account and see if it's limited. 99% of the cases your account will be fine.

Scams only work if you let them. You need to have an attitude of guilty before proven innocent on the Internet -- otherwise it will chew you up and spit you out.

That's exactly what I did. I was just surprised how real it was.

I can see a lot of people falling for it.

I've been selling through PP for five years. I have dozens of email addys. I get uncountable amounts of spam and I've never seen this one before.

So thanks for your helpful post but maybe everyone isn't as "in the know" as you.

Better to warn people who know, than not warn people (like me before today) who don't.

      Just sayin...

Mine didn't go to the spam folder.

It appeared like so many other PP emails, complete with service@Paypal.

It also showed up right after I had increased activity, and made some ebay purchases for the first time in quite some time.

Although many of us get these, I think it is good that you brought it up because there are surely some people here that may not realize it is a scam.

You should never answer emails that seek to update your accounts. Be very suspicious of any emails in fact, or you may spend the next two days rebuilding your computer. Not a fun job. I know. I have done it.

I get all kinds of emails from Paypal in a lot of different email accounts. I just pitch the darn things into spam and don't bother to open them. Some days the spam folders are already full of emails from other dirtbag spammers that didn't make it through the filter. Amazing how many problems with bank accounts or checking accounts I never opened!

The English is wrong. Only slightly, but it's still wrong. Paypal check their emails and they always come with perfect grammar.

They would never say: Some information on your account appears to be missing or incorrect.

That's just bad. Surely they would say: Your account information is out of date...

    Or something like that.
