Help with news section

So I am starting a news section on my site. My writer has just submitted his first article. It is about five hundred words but outlinks to four different webpages. I don't know how I feel about this, but when I look at news sections on other peoples websites, I don't see them filled with links to other websites.

Now, I also don't see links or information on sources or references either. So while citing sources and providing links to sources seems to be the "proper" thing to do, I can find very few examples of real news sections doing much of it.

So what is the proper way for a small niche website to provide niche specific news to its readers?

If you look on the BBC website they have a resource box to the right of the article with external links.

Could you provide an exact link where you see this? I am not seeing anything specifically titled "resources" that links to other pages. I guess you didn't say it was titled resources..Other examples of good news pages greatly appreciated. Trying to come up with the best format.
