Do you need an autoresponder if you only send live emails?

I was wondering if this is possible. If I want to mass email my list just once or twice a month, is there any disadvantage to doing it myself via my personal email or a secondary email, instead of paying for an autoresponder?

Also, is there any private download software that can be automated to do this for me that doesn't require a monthly subscription? It seems like it would be easy to make a program that can simply stay logged in to your email account and send out an autoresponder by itself to the correct email addresses, as long as the program is open and running on your computer.

If this is possible, why is an online autoresponder that you pay for monthly necessary?

After a certain numbers of emails are sent through your PC email program your ISP will shut your account down as spamming or think your PC has been hacked.

Check with your ISP for their email rules and limits.

What Rob says is true, but beyond that, it doesn't look professional. You'll also want to keep your personal stuff separate from your business stuff. Just get Aweber. They only charge $1 for the first one month trial and $19/mo. for up to 500 subscribers -- well worth it if you have a responsive list. There's also less of a chance for your e-mails to bounce and be caught by filters.

    Hi

you can install autoresponder software online from your cpanel if you have linux hosting...

but since it is not a "trusted" domain, you might have deliverability issues.

    now - consider this:

how much is each client worth?

then - after having that figure...

decide if it is cheaper to lose a few than to pay for your autoresponder.

    your call

but i can guess what the answer will be...

An intermediate solution is to use a professional SMTP server. That way you can send your e-mails a couple of times a month, you get no problems with your ISP and you get a higher inboxing rate. The fee is lower than an autoresponder's as you're only paying to send your e-mails, not to host your list.
Google for "Turbo SMTP" and try their 1,000 e-mails trial offer.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

My suggestion: get an autoresponder. Without getting a proper autoresponder in place you are essentially leaving money on the table that could otherwise be in your pocket. Second, it just looks much more professional in my honest opinion. And truthfully, if your online business is not covering the measly $19 per month that aweber charges, then you really don't have a business at all.

If you want to try the free route then about the best
script I've found is Infinite Responder - Free Autoresponder Script

You can at least try this one out and then decide if
you need to pay for another service. There are also
paid scripts that you can run on your own server.
I think ARPreach (NAL) by a fellow warrior is the
    more popular one around here.

I would definatley recommend using an autoresponder becuase follow up is key and you want to build a relationship. People buy from you when they know, like and trust you. For generic mailing I would use Group Mail and get an SMPT server.
