I have been successfully promoting a product for a while as an affiliate, and was analyzing all my stats when I noticed a pattern. The product does very well overseas, but particularly well in a specific country. I think I figured out that the picture of the author (which is a ficitonal person) looks like he comes from that country. So would it be a smart idea, or an evil idea to actually produce a sales page for a product that had a different pen name/photo of the author for each major country? Kind of like a site that changes flags/currency based on your ip location, except it would change pen name/photo. Thoughts?

geo targeting is nothing new but I like your angle.

Not Evil at all. It's very similar to using dynamic keywords.

Would you have to change the name too so that it fits with the face?

Funny you should mention this - I've just been reading about studies on a very similar topic: According to them, responsiveness to written communications increased across a range of measurements by between 15% and 90% when they were signed with a name similar to the recipient, compared to those signed by a person with a very dissimilar name.

Political correctness aside, the simple fact is that people generally respond better to those who are similar to them in some way, whether that be the obvious similarities of race, nationality, or religion... right down to something as simple as having a similar name.

On a related note, I seem to recall mention in one of Robert Cialdini's books of a town in the U.S. that, when deciding to provide aid to those affecting by severe flooding in a neighbouring state, bypassed many closer towns, and instead, focused on one hundreds of miles away... apparently for no other reason that it had the same name as their own town.

Wow! We should request this as a feature in the autoresponders: Changing the signature for every outgoing mail to closely relate to the subsciber.
      Cheezus! that would be huge!

I guess if it always followed your IP, then It would be okay, but even if you did get caught, how bad would it really be, keep in mind this is not an IM niche.

Probably would goose response somewhat but what a lot of work. I'd focus more on editing the copy to appeal to the unique characteristics of the targeted reader.

    Hi Scotech:

If you decide to go the route of different name/photo depending on a country that the product is scene you are not doing anything wrong at all. Good for you asking as well!

It shows you are in tune with the product and the customers. As long as you are promoting something legal and ethical by all means use your knowledge to create a better return.

The only thing you you will have to decide or find out by actual time/investment is if you optimize every site/blog/ad to be specific for a country or a region will the costs go up past your budget and does the return show the increase of business surpasses the time and monies spent?

    Hope it works out great!

Not evil - but definitely smart.

In fact, considering that the author is fictional anyway, it just seems like an extension of what you're already doing.

    Go for it.
