I'm not sure about the charges but if anything, you might need to wait until it's free to register again and then pay the $10.

I believe 45-90 days. I think it depends on the registrar but usually somewhere between those two is normal.

    Sad to hear this.

I waited for 3 years before one of my domain went back to normal rate.

I think you will have to wait months until it is released, and then someone else may backorder or snap it.

It normally takes 80 days for a domain name to become publicly available to register, after the initial expiration date.

There is a 45 day "grace period" where you can renew for the normal registration fee, then it goes into a "Redemption period" of 30 days, where the registrar often charges a few hundred dollars to get it back for you. The last 5 days is called "Pending Delete". After those 5 days, the domain is put back into public access.

Of course, if you wait until it becomes available, you risk the chance that somebody else will snap it up the instant it becomes available.

Note: When it is in the final 5 day Pending Delete period, it will say "Pending Delete" in the WHOIS information (check any whois database like http://whois.sc).

If this domain is important to you, pay the money. Don't wait. You run a high risk of never being able to get it back.
