Hello all,

I've started a blog and had a difficult time choosing what to write about, so I decided to make it a fun blog and each day I am going to post a new story or talk about something I found on the internet that I thought was cool. I probably will also post a few rants when I feel like it.

I am choosing one keyword per article. So for example, my very first post was a poop story, I chose poop as a keyword. Tomorrow I may talk about cars or kids or who knows what, but the keyword will be something different every day.

My question is.....is this a horrible strategy as far as SEO goes for keywords? Should I instead be writing about a similar topic, a specific niche, so that each article, although with different keywords, they will still all relate?

The reason I'm going this route rather than a specific niche, is because I enjoy writing stories, in fact I have dozens of unique some true some not true stories already written....that to me would be fun to do daily. Writing a blog about anxiety or acne or IM would not be so much fun and I think I would fizzle.

And my last question is, this blog is through empower networks, the link to my blog has empower networks in it. I know there are thousands of EN blogs, does this hurt my SEO as opposed to if I had my own host with my own domain?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Heath

    Heath,

The problem with a blog like that is that it is not going to have rhyme or reason. It is just going to be a general rant. I cannot see it doing well unless you will market it pretty heavily.

Even a fun blog could have a theme, or small themes within one large theme. So if your interest is poop than have a section dealing with poop stories and link them to each other so that both humans and search engines can make some sense of it.

With respect to your second question. Why would you have a blog that you obviously intend to carry on for a long time and not make it your own. I don't really know whether you own your EN blog or not . I know that other hosted blogs are not owned by you. Some people lost their Blogger blogs a while back, for example, I would definitely get my own domain and self host it.

You will be able to control your own blog and no one would be able to tell you what to write or not to write on your blog.

      Hi Heath
Google looks for relevance among other things, so if your blog is called Heathj . com and you blog about poop Google can't join the dots so you are unlikely to get any relevant traffic.
What does kids or cars have to do with eachother let alone to poop and how is that relevant to Heathj.

If you just like blogging and writing then use it as an expression vehicle and don't be disheartened if no-one visits your site apart from people you tell.

A website needs structure both technically and thematically.

Check out the analytics (if any are provided) and you will see whether your message is attracting anyone over time. Make sure you have comments enabled to see if you are connecting.

Why not find a subject / niche you like or are involved in and write about that. Use google keyword tool to see what people are looking for around your niche and use that to write a 300 - 500 word article. If no-one reads your blog you may get discouraged.

As ejullya said if you are serious get a domain name and hosting and set up WordPress or similar. Or get someone to build it for you.

I build sites check out firstclassmarketingsolutions.com I also have up to date WordPress training Videos available there.

      Good luck and keep writing

Yeah, what you are doing is a bad idea. Blogs need to have a central theme. Blogs aren't just blogs, anymore. They are like mini communities. If you like writing on a variety of topics, you might consider publishing some stuff on Kindle, becoming a ghostwriter, or starting your own private label rights store.
Once you've been in a particular niche for a while, things do become stale. That's when you start another blog. I'm in the middle of trying to figure out what my next blog should be on.

I dont see any success with this kind of blog. A cardinal sin... you picked a blog first and are seeking out things to write about... instead of picking the niche, and finding ways to exploit it. I think you should scrap the project, and start fresh with a more niche-conscious angle.

I do see blogs out there that rank fairly high in google that tell funny stories or have weird things on them, boingboing.com comes to mind. I was thinking of modelling my blog after something like that.

I appreciate the advice though and will do some reflecting to figure out my next move.

    Thank you.
