Selling e-book on your own site vs Amazon?

Hi,

I'm ready to sell my ebook.

Which is better?

Or

Can i do both? In case yes, then does that mean Amazon allows me to sell the e-book from my site using an instant download after payment method, or will i have to link it to the kindle on amazon?

In my opinion Your site is better because you can sell it for any amount of money but the Amazon ebooks are mainly 2-3 dollars and that requires volumes of sales to make any significant money. But still you should be able to drive traffic to your site.

so does that mean i can only use one avenue for selling, and not both?

If you are good in getting traffic to your site then sell it in your own site; otherwise, sell it in Amazon and then create a blog linking to your Amazon page.

But do their TOS allow me to sell on my own also?

    Hi,

It's going to depend on whether or not you want to engage your book in Amazon's KDP program. It's a promotional program that helps you make a name for yourself by giving your book away for free (you get 5 free days per 90 day period), the point of course is to get good reviews, but the downside is that by doing this you give Amazon an exclusivity agreement.
So in short, if you decide to use their KDP program you can only sell your book on Amazon. If you don't use the KDP then you can do whatever you want.

    Seb.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

      Seb.

You can sell a digital book directly from your own site and at Amazon via the KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) program.

However if you enroll the book in KDP SELECT which is a special feature available within KDP then you commit to exclusivity with Amazon for 90 days for the digital version of the book.

As to what you should do, unless you have major traffic, trying KDP SELECT can be a great way to start to prime the pump and drive sales. You can always unenroll it after 90 days.

    Visitors to Amazon: Millions Daily

Put it on Amazon and put a BUY button on your page that captures their email, then takes them to Amazon to check out.

I'd recommend selling your own ebook, because then you can also capture their emails and build yourself a customers list and then recommend amazon books, maybe.

It is a good idea to sell your book on both, the more promotion you can have, the better

I would recommend you to sell the book in your website.
There are too many titles in Amazon.

Unless you are a famous author or published by renowned publishers,
Your book is unlikely get noticed by the visitors.

Sorry to reveal the hard truth.

You can promote your books in many ways such as
    1. JV with big list
    2. Affiliate marketing
    3. Social media such as Facebook, twitter, etc
    4. Video marketing ( a short intro to your book)
    5. Article marketing
    6. Media buys
    7. Solo ads
    8. Guest posting
    9. Press release
    10. PPC/PPV

Tons of traffic method you can use to
    drive visitors to your site.

No this is not correct. I know plenty of people that were unknown authors doing exceptionally well selling books on Amazon. These books would likely have been lost if they sold them on their own website.

But because they are selling them on Amazon's powerful platform, have a quality product etc., they are making a killing.

Well, there are merits to both. If your book is on the topic of making money online, a "special method" or something of the sort, your own website would probably be a good idea. If your book is a novel, general how-to guide, or interesting non-fiction book, I'd say Kindle. It might seem like a weird way to figure out where to publish, but this is a decent method. Ask yourself: would I read this book on my computer, or as a hardcover/paperback book or on my Kindle. Generally, if it's on your computer, you'll want to publish on your own site.
However, there's nothing against publishing on both. If you don't want to be a part of Kindle Select (many benefits such as borrowing, free promotions etc.) you can actually publish it elsewhere including on your own site.
    Good luck!
    Alex.

Which means I won't sell it as a normal ebook from my site but link to Amazon just for the sake of showing off. You look a pro having something on Amazon
It's much better than having a normal ebook on site like everybody else... or maybe give it digital download on site and also give option to get it on kindle...
Just to clarify, you can still sell your book on your own website as an Amazon affiliate or just give a link to it at Amazon if it is enrolled in KDP Select.

However, if it is enrolled in KDP Select you cannot sell it DIRECTLY from your site as a digital book. So you would have to link to the Amazon site for the customer to make the purchase.

Thank you everyone for all the great replies. I simply love this forum. But I'll only be honest if I say I'm more confused now.

      How does this sound?

I sell the book on my site and and on Amazon, through the normal KDP. Does the 'select' feature push your book up when a search is made? and is it a considerable push?

As far as I know, no it doesn't... To me it's only a way to offer your book for free in order to make a name for yourself and get reviews. There are also plenty of Kindle-specialized websites out there that will let you announce your free periods, it's a way of gaining more exposure but your book has to be in KDP Select so that you can make it available for free. Try the Authors Marketing Club they've got a list of websites where you can announce your free periods. Author Marketing Club - Free Book Marketing Resources & Tools For Authors

Ok, but won't this feature benefit normal fiction books more than low priced how to manuals (like mine). And i read that the prime members are those who have a kindle. Now i have affilaite links in my ebook, so they won't be able to click on them. SO you think it's bettter if i just go for the normal kindle route?

If you are selling your digital book directly on your site and on Amazon than you are not eligible for KDP Select so you will not get any sales benefit from Select.

If you enroll your book in KDP Select it does give you a few nice benefits. You can give the book away for 5 days every 90 days. If you have a successful give away this can help boost your PAID sales and skyrocket your book to popularity. This will help your book appear in the customers who bought this also bought this section which is awesome advertising.

In addition, Amazon Prime members can borrow your book at no charge to them but you still receive royalties on it.

But there is a lot to be said for having your books on other platforms like Smashwords etc. also.

It's not that one is necessarily better than the other because there are so many factors that will decide if it will be successful for you.

Look, you can write a 90 page ebook and sell it on your own website and from there you have many platforms and networks that you can sell it on (Digibilly, Warriorplus, JVZoo, Clickbank, Paydotcom, E-Junkie, Nanacast, etc.).

Then you write a 15-20 page ebook / report and sell it for like $2.99 or whatever (less) on the Kindle platform to generate leads. You can write about specific topics if this is non-fiction.

So you CAN do both at the same time.

I see a lot of Kindle authors make simple mistakes such as not having a decent book cover, not knowing how to use keywords within the Amazon Kindle system, how and when to use their KDP program, how to become a "best seller" in record time, how to promote their ebooks on Kindle, etc.......

There's a lot to know out there on how to become a successful Kindle author. The same holds true for marketing and promoting your own ebook. One of the biggest mistakes I see marketers make is they only focus on that one ebook. There should be a comprehensive product strategy, even if it simply means becoming an affiliate and marketing other people's products while you build your own list.

One is not better than the other, it all depends on your execution. In my world, I do BOTH and when I first start out I have two different versions of my ebooks so that I can do them both at the same time. And when I roll them out, I already have a back-end strategy in place (this is where the real money starts to come in).

Thanks. I do have a back-end strategy. And the main purpose of the book is to generate leads. SO in this case, does a kdp select make sense?

It would depend on where you can get the most sales from. If you can get more sales from KDP Select than yes it would.

However, keep in mind that Amazon does not want books whose main purpose is promotional or for advertising so you will have to approach this by offering a quality book and take care how you do the the lead capture.
