How important is it to protect the domain ownership information?

Hello Folks,
I have a few domains where you can find out the details of the domain owner. Are there any services that hide these details? How important is it to protect one's identity?

not that i know off. The only way i know is to buy the domain with a privacy option.

name.com gives free privacay option. Perhaps transfer the domain over?

    Three options

    1) Most domain providers will offer privacy / whois protection; some charge a fee. Namecheap gives it free for the first year, Godaddy used to throw it in if you bought 5 or more domains....

    2) If you've got a business registered, you could show the business as the owner instead; and use a separate email id just for the domain contact.

    3) I've seens several instances of obvious false names, on occasion (do you really know anyone named asdf?); you take your chances if you do this.. Not recommended, you could end up losing the domain...

when you buy a domain , your information is stored at the server where anyone can see your profile via Whois. so they get your phone no., your address, and your nameservers!, nothing else.
