OTO Vs Upsell - Confusion...

It is increasingly happening... I thought I would put my view forward, as this seems to confuse some people.

More and more people pop an "OTO" onto their launches front end...Obviously it is no problemo! Plenty people roll with this! and it's definitely the way to go when monetizing a launch!

But, it is in fact an up-sell...

The difference?

An upsell is something that is there to add value to a launch.. It is there to make people purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add ons in an attempt to make a launch more profitable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

An OTO AKA ONE TIME OFFER - which is only available at the time of purchase. (yes it is a form of upselling, I know, but there is a limited time on a one time offer)

Do think there is a difference? And if so, do you believe people should call upsells OTO's.. even though they aren't.

I don't believe They should be personally! But each to their own..

Its not a big issue I just wondered what fellow warriors opinions were.

Input is appreciated

For me an upsell should be an upsell. For example if you sell a Facebook marketing coaching, the uspell should be an upgraded version of your product.

An OTO can be any product you want to offer to your customers.

To be honest I only heard the term OTO here on the Warrior forum and I agree if it is indeed not a "one time offer" it is just an upsell and should not be called a OTO.

    I just call them upsells.

I'm not sure how the terminology got switched around - for years I called them "upsells" until somehow on the WF WSO section the big term became "OTO". Obviously, as you said, and OTO is a form of upsell, but usually only offered once. Most WSO's call them OTO, but they aren't true OTO's, just upsells.

If customers can't get to the Sales Page for the Upsell except after purchasing the Front End offer, I think you can resonably call it on OTO...

If you ever send traffic to the Sale Page for the Upsell independent of anyone having to purchase the Front End product, well then, it's not an OTO...

Just an opinion though. I drive traffic to my Sales Pages a variety of ways so I always use the term Upsell.

LOL. Yea OTO can be offered even if there's no product. When people opt into my list, I offer then a mind boggling deal. I don't promote it at all but I let them know that they will never see it again.

It sucks that my theme won't allow me to code it as a true OTO where they will be redirected if they try to come back but oh well..

It works quite well to. 19 optins and 2 sales yesterday. 6 optins so far today and 1 sale.

If I were doing an upsell, I could link the buy it now button to another page that offers the same deal but with more features.

The Upsell is balances on the fact that they are ready to spend money with you so why not give them more for a little more money..

    Just genius in my book..

many people are now conditioned to OTO's you only have to see how many people ask the questions "is there a OTO" in a wso thread

i think many people ask this but still have no idea what it actually really means

a oto means it is only available one time, this is why i like to use the term "low ticket product" or "front end product" instead because in my funnels they are not only available one time

    Hey Craig,

I'd say an upsell is something to offer that is complementary to your main offer, such as "Would you like fries with that ..."

An OTO is something that is basically an upsell with a sense of urgency, such as "Would you like fries with that, buy them in the next 30 seconds at half price"...

A OTO is just an offer that people see only once. It need not be in a funnel or presented after someone purchases another product. I could just send out a OTO offer to my list tomorrow without having them buy any product beforehand. So long as they only get one option to buy then it is technically a one time offer.

An upsell however is an offer presented to someone after they have already purchased another product. This could be in the form of a standard offer or a OTO. So a OTO can be an upsell but an upsell cannot be a OTO.
