So my mom wants to do Internet marketing....

So my mom told me the other she wants to dabble in making money online.

She is a complete newbie when it comes to this and basically knows zero of the terminology.

I am having a tough time deciding on a good newbie friendly method thats simple to implement but that can still generate results.

I was thinking of setting her up with a Blogger blog and putting up some Adsense so she can blog about her passion (medicine).

Is this a sound idea?

Any tips for making this as newbie friendly as possible for her?

Thanks!

      Hey Edwin,

I'd would go down to how much knowledge your Mum has in terms of the basics (I mean THE BASICS). Coz it will be a lot harder to teach her if she doesn't even know the simple stuff.

I'd suggest youtube videos also as the best source of information for newbies. A couple of trainings vids before she can start a blog of her own.

I hope this makes perfect sense!

I'd say the same thing Alex... No better place to start and doesn't cost you much.

That's not a bad idea, just make sure she is creating an email list from it. Blogging can be really slow at first. What I did was create a fairly low quality list first then sent people from my list to my blog. Reason being, I could sell to the list while I built quality on my blog.

No, just buy a domain and put her website on your hosting already... Then tell her to write informative articles about the niche (good articles). Point her to forums and social groups within the niche to start promoting her site. Take her articles and approach others for syndications, find the thread by Alexa on how to do this. Build a list, sell, done .

Obviously your have to set her up a WP site, that won't take long tho.

I agree with this; she might as well own her web property; that way when it takes off, she will have the confidence that it can't be taken from her.

I just picked up a fantastic WSO that is extremely newbie friendly, and would require minimal if any help from you to get her building a list fast; check it out (not shilling for it; just a fan): http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...see-proof.html

The thing that impressed me most was it is a simple plan that will grow a list fast, without technical abilities or knowledge, and adds only buyers! Claire Koch (hope I got her name right), very seasoned Warrior says it's the best IM product she's seen in 18 years. Check it out!

      This is good advice.

If she has a lot of interest in an area then she's going to be
happy writing about it, taking pictures and posting them etc
      etc

And you should be able to find a way to monetize it over
      time.

At worst she'll be involved in doing something she loves and
helping other people in that niche so she'll have a fulfilling
      experience.

That beats the hell out of trying to chase the latest idea of
the week to make money from the internet.

      Kindest regards,

That sounds a good idea, it’s always best to start any business with the marketer’s full interest on it especially for starters. This is because, any person with the passion for a certain project are most likely to succeed in the business. Setting up a website for your mom is a good start and if possible, invest with a lesser capital so that there won’t be much frustration just in case it doesn’t work. Well, you can always have her sign up for packages that will help her set up her website, but try to assist her first and see if she can do it on her own. She will definitely get the feeling of dedication once she has inputted her own efforts on her business.

Your mom could try social media (i.e. facebook, twitter etc), and, also do services on freelance sites. I am sure she has real world experience that would translate in either a marketing capacity, or, work from homw customer service type capacity.

Social media is a good idea because she can meet people with similar interests. She should also see what blogs about the topics she is interested in look like.

There are so much information in the War Room that you can paid for her and you can get your mother to read through the different threads. Once she decided on one system to follow, you might want to remind her to have discipline in following the system.

If this was my mom I would find some stuff she is interested in (you mentioned medicine) then find some related Amazon products for her to promote. Most Amazon products have little to no competition and she could see some results quickly in some cases.

Hope this helps and good luck to your mom.

    Cheers,

That sounds like a good idea.
If she can narrow down medicine that would be even better.
Perhaps she can create a short report or e-book, MP3 on her passion and sell it from the site.
    Just some ideas.

I would suggest getting started with list building. Simply buy an autoresponder such as Aweber and then buy some solo ads from the WF. Once your list has grown, do some adswaps to build a bigger list. Then build trust and rapport with that list and then market to them.
PureLeverage provides both an autoresponder and 100% commissions when promoting their product.
    Just my two cents

I wouldn't go that route only because I've had a blogger blog get decimated with 100% unique, non spammy content. That'll crush her if she puts work into it and wakes up one day and it's gone.

Splurge for a $10/yr domain and her own WP blog on a hatchling plan at Hostgator. Get it all set up for her and just teach her to blog, share her personality and promote things on Amazon.

I started my Mom out this way and she was doing pretty good with a specific cooking niche Amazon site, but she got sidetracked with ghostwriting.

    Good luck to her!

Maybe have her find a PLR book that she is interested in and then she could research ways to market and sell that book as her own product, editing it as she wished, she could research ways to attract affiliates to promote her new product.

Spare the blogger blog (too risky), and monetize in a way other than AdSense, as in build a list and monetize using some the methods mentioned above (the free ones, that is) such as forums and social groups.

I wouldn't set her up with a blogger blog. Best bet is to get her a domain name and put WordPress on it and let her start blogging. That will get her experience in watching her site rank, she'll have more control over the site's theme, and make it easier for her to sell advertising.

I definitely would NOT do blogger--your own domain is the way to go.

And that would be with eBay!

Seriously - I'd kick her into ebay first.

      1. She will need to set up a proper paypal account (always good to have around)
      2. She will learn how to sell in the description and title of the product and will learn about keywords.
      3. She most likely has some inventory right in her own home and knows what it is she is selling

It is an easy first sale within a week which will test some basic skills and give her confidence.

Not to mention if the attic needs clearing this is a great way to do it too.

Medicine is an excellent topic for articles. If your mother is a good writer she can make a lot of money at Constant Content by writing articles about medicine, which sell at good prices there.

This way she can have cash for her online projects. It’s a good alternative to have many different income streams. Selling products is an option, but offering services is another great option when you have special knowledge.

Blogging is a great idea, but do you know if your
mom even likes to write? A blog has to be maintained
and updated in order for it to be effective and
if she's overwhelmed by the prospect of gathering
data to post on the blog, she probably won't keep
      it up.

I suggest you find out from her what type of
work she would perfer to do before spending money
on a membership or setting up a website/blog. If she's
at home fulltime, she might enjoy talking to people on
the phone. If so, a customer service job would be
      great for her.

Since she's into medicine, help her research several
Health & Wellness home businesses as well. Many can
be worked 100% online and by phone.

Pick her brain for what actually interests her so that she
ends up doing something that she really enjoys, instead
of doing what you think she should do.

I think it should all start with something that she's passionate about. It would also help tremendously if she marketed to people similar to her. For example, I knew a woman who had a healthy food blog. By just spending one or two hours per day updating her blog with recipes and articles she managed to grow a large and responsive audience.

Then she started selling healthy chocolates to her list and she made a TON of money. I think that trust matters more than the choice of niche as in most niches there are several products that you can sell. It helps if you're passionate about the topic, too.

You need to ask her 3 questions that will determine whether she is serious or not.

    First question:

"Are you willing to do what ever it takes to succeed"?

"Do you really believe that you will succeed"?

"If you have some setbacks along the way, will you continue to persist no matter what obstacles you face"?

If she answers YES to all 3 then you should work with her.

  • I love this post! And here's why!

All of a sudden people will start brain storming and work extra hard to come up with solid Internet Marketing ideas that one could proudly present to their mom. It's almost like a bullshit filter that drains out the crap, and leaves you with clean and easy to IM start up suggestions. This is the kind of stuff that is helpful to newbies in general, and makes the web and this forum a much better place.

I think that you shouldn't put any AdSense on it yet. Avoid the pressure. If she can blog, gain readers, read up some other blogs, etc. then give her the time to do so, check back in a month or two and then see how best to monetize it, be it AdSense, an affiliate program, or something else.

Too much pressure early on can make you really tense, really fast and that can't be good for anyone, especially your own mother.

    Hello Edwin,

You had given a great idea to your mom. Taking your passion as your career is the best option for a newbie to start. She can make a blog of her own interest/passion. Writing informative content on regular basis will make the blog more genuine. Once her blog started getting traffic, you can put related affiliate offers and ad sense through which she can start generating income.

I wish her all good luck.

I agree with Kenster. Teach her what you know already works - whatever it is you do.

She doesn't need her own product, but you can set her up with a quick optin page that redirects to your products (if you have any) with her affiliate link after she gets the lead.

Then she can push whatever she wants to them.

This isn't about following passions at the moment, it's about learning how to make money online so she (a) makes money and (b) wants to keep doing it

Agreed...once she gets a taste of of success (even if just a dollar), it will get addicting.

I've found that true with many people I work with (and I was the same). Once you taste success, the rest becomes much easier. The goal is always to earn that first dollar as quickly as possible. Once that is achieved, then start looking long term and into passion projects, etc!

  • Hi,

If your mum is totally clueless and a beginner getting coaching is essential because that is the way everyone making a living online got started. Forums are fine once some knowledge is gained but expecting anyone to make any money from forums in under 12 to 24 months is pure B.S?

It is like putting a 500 piece jigsaw together while getting 10 pieces a day? I also suspect that the learning from here will not be as clearly explained as in a good membership training website as the Chris Farrell Membership for instance. Voted as the very best for beginners on IM Report Card Last 3 years.

The $37 a month is something you could pay for her unless she is willing or able to invest this in her own future success? We learnt how to get started from him after wasting a lot more time and money on other useless courses and wasting time of forums where we never got all the right answers.

His teaching style is geared towards beginners so she will have the best possible foundation to become succesful and can start her online business within a few weeks of joining. Doing so she will avoid all the mistakes she would make if she takes the advice most others are giving here not to mention too much money wasted on scams that promise instant solutions and deliver zero.

That is what we advise but the choice is your's and her's?

    Regards,

    Stephen & Jennifer.

      Pfffft.... no.

Some of us pre-date the ol' interwebs.

And there's no way in hell I'd listen to some random "guru" online. (I went to college; they teach real marketing there.) Most of these people can talk big, but the best they can do is make some pocket money -- not a living wage.

Setting up a blog and using it to recommend Amazon products might give her a good learning curve, provided Amazon isn't currently "banned" in your state (as it is in mine )...

Let her create a blog, participate in relevant forums, connect to people at Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. Add video's to Youtube.

That would be a good start that can work as long as it's interesting enough for people to read/follow.

      Direct money?

      - Sell graphic designs
      - Take writing jobs
      - Offer promo video's

I would teach her the basics of internet marketing.

    1. Create a website.. blog or squeeze page
    2. send high quality traffic to this website
    3. Promote a good product by first sending out massive value then recommending it within the messages.

A lot of people make this business more complicated then it needs to be, and it is very easy to get overloaded with all the information and ways there are to make a buck online.

So just break it down into simple steps for her so she can reach small achievements every day.

First of all, she should be on this forum. You can only do so much in teaching her. In time, as her ideas evolve, she will be able to think her own steps and strategies and it is better for her to have the tools and information at hand instead of asking someone. What is more, she will learn how to look for the information she needs and get some extra information in the process, instead of being given the right answers all the time.

Very sad to see the OP has been banned. I find it touching that a parent is interested in IM and a child is looking to help the parent. Very nice indeed. Warms my soul.

Does she like to write ? Does she have time to spare ? I would say starting a blog is a pretty drawn out process and it's easy to get demoralized if you don't really know what to expect. I've helped people who wanted to try it but they lost interest a few months on. Again, it depends what people expect of IM. I have found that more people can relate to selling physical items on ebay or amazon. Why not get her to go round the thrift stores and liquidator warehouses for items she can sell on amazon ? This seems to be a hot bus. op. at the moment and most people can grasp the concept easily and run with it.

There are tonnes of forums started by work at home moms who want to teach other moms about working at home. And a load of blogs as well.

Maybe she should do some thinking about what SERVICE she could offer. My mom used to do bookkeeping - that's a better proposition than messing around with Wordpress.

Try to suggest her to begin with blogging. Also recommend some good e-books to her. Each beginning is tough, but she has her chances to succeed and maybe a lot of talent, who knows?

Actually setting up a blog is a great idea! This way she can learn wordpress basics and some marketing stuff. Also it's a good idea to put an optin form in to the website ( for example if She is doing medicine, she can create medicine list and sell them some products from amazon, clickbank and etc). Tell her to make a facebook and twiter fanapge and most imporantly - She must build a good releationship with that list, so they can trust her and she can sell them stuff. This is great business model for beginners and I know it from my own experience.

I think it is great that your mom is looking at internet marketing. It is simply the best way to secure a retirement in a short amount of time.

I use a blogging system that is Granny proof. It is very easy to use and comes with step by step training and daily live training webinars that cater to all ages and computer abilities.

If you want you can send her to my signature below.
All I can say is encourage her and allow her to set her own pace, then just up it a bit so she can realize her goals in a timely manner.

    Hi,

Whatever you do, don't start her out on a free blog. First of all, she won't own the content and second of all her blog could get shut down at any time for no reason. That would take the wind right out of her sails and might really discourage her.

There's a lot of good advice here on the forum, hope you take advantage of it.
    Good luck to your mom!

If medicine is what she knows then blogging is a good start.

Many people who don't have insurance turn to the internet for answers and follow the recommendations to fix their problem. Once she learns SEO she can dominate the niche and then learn other areas of IM while building her blogs.

you could point her in the directions of some resellers so she can do affiliate marketing. Youtube videos payout for views per their advertisements-though this would take a considerable amount of time. I dont think there is any real easy solution to this, if it was the case everyone would be making easy dough online, lol

I'd say try to start her out with a couple of free affiliate programs specifically related to the medical industry - and the things about medicine that she enjoys the most. She could use both blogging and social media at first to see what she enjoys the most.

I think it's important to begin with a cheap (or free) strategy and to avoid creating a large website or spending a lot of money on hosting, graphics, domain name etc. - at least until she figures out the basics.

  • Edwin Torres,

Your mum is not taking no for an answer as if she has a suicide mission to drive the truck when she can't even drive a mini car.
Yeah, I reckon you just setup a simple Word Press blog and get her to spend her time releasing all her knowledge on it. You never know, one day the domain name might become valuable if she's good at her stuff and her writing.
When her blog gets popular, she can write short articles and put a link to Content Unlocking so anyone interested in reading the rest will have to Unlock the Content where it won't cost them anything in terms of money but only some time filling in CPA free trial offers or doing some manual 5 mins work but she'll earn some money.
Do research on how to make money with "Content Locking". I myself getting into it but slightly differently. This is where my automation tools would work for you such as find you customer leads from Social Networks and save data and lock them up via these online Content Locking Services and if you want to unlock the results then you have to do something like "FACE BOOK LIKE" one of my other sales pages or provide a link to these sales pages from your Twitter Tweets. Only then, the results would be shown to you. This way, I get my tool users to use my tool without paying me for it but only after promoting my other links of my premium tools.
Good way to use people to build your links "organically".
If you or anyone like the sound of this or hate it then do comment.

    Cheers!

She might enjoy the traffic exchange industry. You can start making money quickly, however, it isn't a lot of money that you make right off. There are no free lunches though, you know how it goes... It might be a nice community for her to give a try.

  • 1) Get an account on Textbroker.com and write 5 to 10 articles - this is so she can see some cash come in the door before starting something that will take some lead time

    2) Build an Amazon review site (with both Amazon and Adsense on it) - this will teach how to build sites and monetize them

This should keep her busy for a few months at which point she will decide if she wants to continue and if what interests her

    Good luck

Any tips for making this as newbie friendly as possible for her?

    Thanks!

I think one of the best ways to get instant traffic and making money is using tumblr or youtube but now I want to share a tumblr strategy because this is so easy to tap into that traffic. It is almost ridiculous.

You just decide what to share pictures about. For example cakes. You can find dozens of great images daily on weheartit.com or pinterest. Copyrights are not an issue because with tumblr you can mention the source.

Then you just register for a free account on getresponse. Grab a form code and you can start building an email list and you ca send them promotions, cookbook recommendations.

Let me know what you think.
