Duplicate Content on site

Hi. A simple question. Is having any duplicate content onsite harmful or just ignored by Google? We have thousands of property descriptions which are duplicate and we plan in the future to individualise and they are relevant descriptions.
Basically I just need to know if Google actually penalise duplicate content rather than just ignore it? I see this type of duplicate content on many of the top sites in my sector ie it seems tobe very common for property descriptions.

Google will penalise duplicate stolen content rather than ignoring it, so you should be careful to use only original unique content. This is the best way nowadays.

Google will for sure put the hammer on you for duplicate content. There are several software choices that can help re-word most of your content.

As long as you have plenty of unique content you should be ok. It's when someone tries to use all duplicate content to build a spammy site they get in trouble. There are many highly respected real estate sites who all share listings, I don't think this will hurt you.

This question actually belongs in a different thread, but since you asked it here, you do NOT have to worry about duplicate content issues for property descriptions. This is because the reason the duplicate content exists is NOT to deceive Google; rather it is a consequence of the properties being described the same way on several sites.

Let me refer to you to the definitive answer which comes straight from Google:

Duplicate content - Webmaster Tools Help

    The key paragraph is:
" In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results."

In the situation you described, the intent is not to manipulate ranking. So, call it a day and have a good night's sleep.

Was shocked when I read this a couple weeks ago. I also believed the "duplicate content myth" for years and years.

I was actually trying to find a place to post a similar question and saw it started here.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me.
If a person has a blog and it posts on the front page, it also has it's own post page
inside. I know that Google doesn't like duplicate content on the same site, but by default, Wordpress does this automatically.

Is there a problem with it showing the same post twice on a site? Do you ask not to
index the post page, or do do you just leave it?

Not meant to hijack the thread, but it's an extension of the original post.

    Thanks
