Clearing the keyword haze

Over the past 12 months I've studied a few different keyword research techniques. Im not sure which are good and which are bad. What keyword process is effective? Had the keyword research process changed much since Panda/Penguin? Thanks!

Correct me if I am wrong - I am just a beginner at internet marketing after all - but I think it depends on what you plan on doing with your website. If you want to sell a certain product check magazine.com or ebay.com and see if there is a market for your product. Otherwise, just look for low competition keywords to target.

(totally unrelated note; this is my 400th post, woot)

Have seen many diff approaches. Wordtracker is a start for finding out is a keyword is viable. I use SBI. they have a brainstormer that does really good keyword research through Wordtracker and returns search volume, how many sites are optimized around keyword, as well as a potential profitability of that keyword or phrase. i use their sitebuilder as well. Follow my ste link and click on site-build-it to learn more.

I have two of the more popular KW tools which I use regulalry - Market Samurai and Long Tail Pro. (Yes, I know it's a bit over the top having TWO but hey.........)

Anyway, both cost about the same but have different pros and cons. In a nut shell both have the ability to analyse KWs and then provide a table advising if the KW is likely to be commercially viable - they just do it slightly differently (Note to self: must get round to producing a comparison review video)

I know that we shouldn't treat these tools as totally definitive and we should use our own experience before selecting our main money making KW but hey, they are a darned site quicker than using the Google Keyword Tool.

I really don't want to buy a tool- not until I make money online to pay for it. What do the tools do that I can't with Google keyword? What parameters does it take into effect that The keyword tool doesn't?
