How do I start?

Now I want to start blogging about stuff I am passionate about. Like gardening and landscape, I love working on my yard and making it pretty. So how would I get started into making this into a profitable blog? I've never blogged before, how would I start? What steps should i take? How would I drive traffic? Need a few tips.

    Hey!

I'd set up your blog, get an auto responder set up (capture leads!).

Post in your fav related forums, blog hop... I am doing something similar on my blog! Just to prove that doing it consistently works!

    Best of luck!

    Start with branding.

If you want to do a gardening site, start looking for
good domain names that you can purchase, and
then either create a few logo/header graphics or
get a few made for your site and start creating
    content, sharing content, etc.

Build a list, and build a list too.

There is a ton of great information on Warrior Forum for everything you need. Alex has got you pointed in the right direction.

Get started with getting your Wordpress site setup, adding great content and getting an opt-in (for building your list).

I think at that point it would be appropriate to start choosing your affiliate products to promote. It's probably best to focus on one thing at a time and not get overloaded with that you're trying to do.

Go to wordpress or blogger and get a site. Also think of a domain you would want to buy. Are you doing this for fun or do you want to brand yourself? If serious put your name in the domain... like: Gardeningwith____.com. I would strongly recommend checingk out other websites or blog in you niche and mimicking there layout.

If you are looking for free methods, you can use Facebook and Twitter to market your blog. Get active in your niche and they traffic will come :-)

Self-hosted WordPress is certainly one good option. Not a hosted one at wordpress.com (that would be contrary to their terms of service).

The frequency matters less than the traffic-attracting plan. (I update all my niche blogs only three times per month each and have built up a profitable business that way. I've never dreamed of updating daily.)

      You need a traffic-generating plan.

I advise you strongly, especially if selling ClickBank or similar products, not to build a business that's dependent on Google for traffic.

There are hundreds and hundreds of threads in the forum discussing the question "How do I get traffic?". That's your starting-point, I think.

Personally, I'd advise you not to put too much of your time and effort into trying to attract "organic SERP's" traffic, for two main reasons: first, it's very precarious and makes your business Google-dependent, and any business that's Google-dependent is no more than one algorithm-change away from a potential accident (or even a potential disaster), as so many Warriors have been finding out over the last year or two, some of them to their very great cost; secondly, for me, search engine traffic has been uniformly the worst-converting traffic out of everything I've ever tried in 8 entirely different niches over the whole of the last 4 years - search engine visitors to all my websites typically stay the least time, view the fewest pages, opt in the least often and actually buy anything by far the least often. I admit I do get tons of search engine traffic to all my main sites (because high rankings for multiple keywords happen to be a minor side-benefit of the main targeted traffic-generation method I use to build my business) but I'd certainly hate to have to make a living just from that traffic, and I wouldn't even be cursing too much if Google de-indexed all my sites this afternoon. Don't depend on search engines for traffic. That's what all the people here (and in other forums) have done, who end up wondering where they've gone so wrong.

Anyway, I think you've made a really good decision to try "gardening", if it's your passion, rather than the "make money online" stuff you've been trying so far.

Yes to Wordpress - but set one up on your own domain with hosting and NOT a free blog. If you are serious about continuing, a domain will cost around 10.00 and to start hosting at HostGator it will cost $4.00 a month. If you host on a free account you'll be in danger of all the work you do being shut down.

the same is true for an autoresponder and collecting names/email addys. You can not use MailChimp, a free account, because it is against their terms of service to sell products. Aweber has a $1.00 trial and then it's only $20.00 a month.

Your total monthly expenditure will be around $25.00 a month for a business - not sure where you can run a business for less than that

Within a couple of months you should be selling some affiliate products and making up that $25.00 and then some.

Read through Alexa's posts and use the search bar on the WF to look for answers to the questions you have. Don't forget Youtube - great place to learn how to install your Wordpress blog etc.

First you require to do a through research on the niche market to find out the prospective.

Keywords Research and Selection should be the 2nd steps.

Then work on the competitor analysis, take top 10 competitor from Google with your top priority key phrases.

    And work on the following:

    Design Structure
    Website Navigation
    URL Structure
    Anchor Text placement
    Back link analysis
    Social Channel
    Call to Action
    etc.

Hope my suggestion will help you.

I know a bit about this. I am a senior member at GardenWeb and I encourage you to be part of that community. You can get a lot of traffic from there if you give good advice and are friendly and helpful. You should also look for similar forums and make your presence known there. As Craig and Alexa (hi Alexa!) said, you should have an opt-in form on your blog right from the start. Offer a gardening/landscaping ebook with tips and advice. If you have a passion for this, you can really go crazy with it. I would heartily encourage you to take photographs of your garden and post them. I would also post tutorials and how-tos. You can go to Yahoo answers and post links to them when you see the appropriate questions appear. Good luck!
