Foreign accent in video tutorials

Hello warriors,

Just want to know your opinion about one thing. Let's say I'm planning to create approx. 80 tutorial videos about IM. However, I have foreign accent (baltics) and I probably make some grammatical mistakes here and there as well. What's your reaction about that? Would it bother you enough to ask for a refund?

Thanks

I just made a random video. My mic was too close, so sorry if you need to hear my breathing.. -.-

well as long as the content is legible.. and maybe let them hear a sample before they buy... i guess it would depend on a lot of factors..

Few mistakes and foreign accent are not enough reason for a refund, at least for me. As long as your presentation can reasonably understood, I'm good with that.

I'm also non native English speaker though, it probably makes me have higher tolerance than natives.

Dude, before you make 80 freakin' videos, make one and post it. We can go from there.

    What Travlinguy said.

Put it out for a poll to native English speakers.
If you are hard to understand it is a no go.

When I was a newbie in this business I don't really know why but I would always trust more a guy that is similar to me then otherwise. For example in my early years I stumbled upon on of John Chow's salespages and I really don't know why I couldn't trust him. I was like, how can someone that speaks english so slow earn so much money on the internet. I had the wrong attitudide at that time, but I guess some newbies will relate to my experience.

No problem at all. You're good to go.
** edit - make sure you have a foam thing for your microphone to keep out the pffft noises. Lol - can't remember what they're called.

It is called a Pop Screen. You can buy them very cheaply and they make a huge difference to the quality of your audio.

  • I have a foreign accent too and I always voice over my sales videos (foreign accents trigger distrust and hurt conversions. It's a psychological thing). The tutorial videos? nah no need as long as your English is fluid and legible enough.

I have to agree with you. I have always voiceovered my salespage videos.

Why not convert your videos to scripts and have a native speaker on fiverr do your vids?

    That seems fine to me.

What is a foreign accent anyway? You're always going to be foreign in some part of the world anyway.

I think so long as you are understandable that is fine. It is more about the quality you deliver than the polish of the presentation.

I have a strong English accent by the way...

I would have an issue if I couldn't understand a word someone is saying..I mean if you purchase a training video you definitely want to make sure you understand and learn but from your video you have nothing to worry about my friend. Clear as day..now good luck with the 80+ videos.

Seems fine to me, might have the mic a little too close though, you speak far more clearly than the majority of youtube users I hear.

As many others have already said, your accent doesn't detract from your message. However, you are right to ask native English speakers' opinions because there are many people - including many 'native' English speakers, who have accents that are unintelligable to even people from their own countries!

I can think of a few marketers from the UK who have such broad regional accents that I have no idea what they are talking about!

    Yours is fine.

I would, however, suggest that you try to inject a little bit more enthusiasm into your presentation. It does come across as a bit one-toned.

It's not about your accent it's about what you are giving to others sometime non native-english speakers can be clear and explain things well

Personally I think it makes the person appear intelligent when they are European and speak such excellent English.

Especially considering here in the UK, foreign language isn't our strong set.

In the example video you were clear and easy to understand.

Don't worry about the odd mistake. As I said, here in the UK, very few of us speak any foreign language well, so we're too busy being impressed by your general English than picking up on a rare mistake.

So i'd say go for it. In many respects, it's actually a positive.

      Best of luck.
