UK Warriors! Who Is Your ISP?

Need help with internet provider, I am currently with plusnet and supposedly the fastest fibre optic they have.............I think my internet was quicker before broadband when we were with AOL. I have also tried BT and their top speed fibre I cannot access WP-Admin on any sites with BT so had to cancel that after many months of stress!.
Anyone in the UK with a different provider who allows you to access all sites such as hostgator, wordpress dashboards and works at a decent speed? Thanks

I use a 3 dongle and have no problem with accessing sites. It does not sound like an ISP problem. I would recheck your computer is up to scratch. As for WP access that could be a slow shared server or even conflicting wp plugins.

Have you done a broadband speed check? (broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk)

In my opinion and experience, PlusNet are the best UK provider outside of the main cities. Their help lines are in the UK and never fail to be friendly and helpful.

If you can't even access your wordpress admin area you have a serious problem and changing your provider is unlikely to sort out the problem. It's most likely that you have line problems or wiring problems.

    Have you phoned PlusNet?

It is not a problem with just one computer when accessing WP admin areas, it is on 2 laptops and a desktop and also my parents have an office locally they use BT Fibre optic also and I cannot access the same stuff there also. I will get on to plusnet again, though with them I can access the admin areas but the speed is horrendous, it is with BT I cannot and could not, plus net tell me just to hardwire in to the internet which is not practical where my line is and where my office is, .................. I have tried the internet speeds checker and all plusnet say to that is they get x speed and it shows we should, so personally I haven't found them/their support very useful apart from the fact they speak english...............I will look into Virgin and Zen Net thanks, I am moving house soon so just wanted to see what others are finding to be a good reliable provider, before I get tied into any new contract......thanks for all the advice I will look into all avenues advised

hey marcos i work for a isp in the uk.
just a couple of questions for ya buddy and i should be able to help ya.
1.did the problem stop when hard wired
      2.what should your speed be?
3.what was your speed when using speed checker?
      4. on the bt side of things what was the message you got trying to get in to the wp adim area.

i work on fixing theses problems every day so should be able to help.

        Hey Yesook

Thanks for the reply no the problems did not stop when hardwired
The speed should be up to 76mbs speeds ( this is what it currently states on their website for my package though I am paying through the nose compared to the rates today nearly £40.00 for internet & Phone and we do not use the landline. It was just under £30.00 for Broadband and then the phone rental!!!)

The speedcheck states we are running at as of this evening I have just ran a check they are appalling!!

        Download speed is 4.2mb - V Poor
Upload speed is 4.6mb - seems OK against some others!

On the BT side of things it just would not even load to the admin area at all , just a case of like the screen has locked on a blank page.................. when I try to use WP at my parents sometimes it will allow me access to the dashboard but when you try a secondary action it just locks and you get no further just the tab at the top keeps circling like it is trying to load a page!.

Hopefully you may have some insight on this? Cheers for your assistance

ok lets try fix the speed first buddy
what site did you use to check the speed? could you try bbmax google it and when you do could you do it hardwired.
also changing the channel will not affect other devices in any way. the wifi channel can slow your speed if next door is on the same channel.
also have you got the white openreach fiber box before the router/

Ah. If you can't access the admin areas at all - are they all hosted by the same webhost? It's most likely that your ip address has been banned - possibly because you inadvertently made too many attempts to log-in.

Contact your web host and see if that's what's happened. One of my webhosts has software that does that.

No I use a couple of different hosts, I had hoped by moving to one which is in a European location I could fix this as one of the BT engineers who came out said they do seem to block some sites worldwide but they won't admit it or rectify he had encountered people whom want to get onto Chinese sites and stuff had the same issues. Not really due to login attempts as it just doesn't function, it sometimes allows access but then locks and you cannot do anything else. As I say with plusnet I now can get into the dashboards but I spend half my time looking at the circle on the internet tab ticking over for ech time at least a minute. Even trying to load and reload this forum is very slow.........once again thanks for your assistance all is very welcome.

I've been with most of the main UK ISPs over the years apart from the mobile companies and PlusNet. Both BT and SKY were awful DSL connections and I canceled both within 3 months or so. I have been on a fibre Virgin Media connection for over 5 years, and NTL before them. The speed is superb (currently 100Mb) and I have never had any downtime which is quite something. I would definitely recommend a Virgin fibre connection providing its in your area.

Thanks for the info Virgin looks like a good one to try for when I move I think it is most probable it will be in my new location, and I will start looking at this tomorrow.(And hopefully I will have moved in about 6 weeks!) Are you a user of WP and does it allow access etc etc?.... That's the problem having to cancel them as it is a complete nightmare once you sign up they have you tied in.......though given the level of time and cost I spent with BT they eventually "let me off" the rest of the contract!! Cheers again for the info

No probs, I can't speak highly enough of a fibre Virgin connection. I'm not sure about their DSL service but the fibre is superb. I am on a rolling contract as far as I know, so I'm not tied into anything and I can cancel whenever.

As for your WP problem, that's nothing to do with your ISP. WP is just a platform, not a website (I'm presuming your talking about the self hosted app here, and not Wordpress.com). Virgin have been blocking a lot of file sharing sites here in the UK but they do that by IP address, so there are plenty of workarounds.

Try installing the Opera browser and enable the Turbo setting. This will re-route your connection through another IP. Or install a free VPN like HotSpot Shield which will change your IP. Try one of those and then test all of your access problems with WP etc. I'm sure they won't improve.

I live in CheshireI'm out in the countryside, I don't have fiber optic yet. I use Sky Broadband, with TV and Phones.

I have noticed over the past year my speed has improved, I get around 4mb/s second download speed then 0.8mb/s upload speed. It is slow when downloading and uploading things however, I have a fast custom built computer so its not too bad.

You have to pay the sacrifice when living in the countryside I guess, I know up in Manchester and my family who live in Cardiff have speeds of 100mb/s, I'm sure its even better in London.

I know quite a few villages in Cheshire that have fiber optic, my closest town doesn't have it yet, but in a few years I think it will.

Ps, have you had much snow? Close by to me we have had snow covering cars and a load of sheep, in some places its 10ft high and lots of roads are closed.

Having had experience of both DSL and Fibre connections there really is no contest, so I feel sorry for those on DSL setups. But living in the countryside doesn't mean you have to have a slow internet connection. Did you know you can get satellite broadband? It's delivered through a dish instead of a cable. I've no experience of any of the providers and you pay a little more, but here's some examples -

        Have you logged into MyVirginMedia?

There is a service update regarding this.

        There is a fault disruption.
Virgin Media Mail is having trouble sending and receiving emails at the moment, so there might be a bit of a delay.

I don't use their email service anyway, I prefer Gmail and my own sites emails. With regards to the marketing, I get a few flyers with offers of Mobiles etc, but I have never received a phone call. Perhaps they have my old number

Yeah I've seen the announcements and forum posts. It's all working fine now.

I have one email address that I've always used since the Blueyonder days besides my other domain emails that are connected with my businesses.

To be honest, the calls aren't so frequent now because I either hang up or if my guitar is within reach I'll sing them a song.

I think they have tagged me as a "don't call" lunatic.

We live out in the country so have always lagged a wee bit behind when new stuff came out. In our town there is no cable at all so Virgin is not an option.

We recently got BT Infinity fibre-optic and regularly get 60Mb download. It has worked flawlessly since we got it 3 or 4 months ago so I can't fault it at all.

Speed testing only means something when the PC you are testing with is hard-wired to your router. If you do it over WiFi then the speed will be restricted by the wireless.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Haha, I have an offline client who was with them. She was struggling with some speed issues but she's not tech savvy, so I offered to help. I actually knew more about the problem than their customer support, but between us we couldn't solve the issue. I was on the phone to them about 3 times over a period of time but in the end they had to send out a techy guy to fix whatever it was. She canceled the contract eventually and went with a BT business connection.

I'm in N. Ireland and I actually find them pretty good. Over the last 5 years I have been very happy with their service.

I think they are either moving away from their foreign customer support or their new foreign customer support are very fluent in English, but your right, their customer support used to be atrocious.

It was a nightmare experience in customer service, and they were foreign as I recall. I'll admit it was an isolated case, but enough to show me how they operate. I couldn't recommend them to anyone based on that encounter..

I'm with virgin now, most of the time they are good but sometimes they are bad (like most isps).

If its happening from multiple locations (your house, parents office) then it is most likely a hardware fault at the exchange (we had a similar experience and it took a long time to sort out and A LOT of hours on the phone to technical support to sort out).

We actually had to prove to them that there was a problem in the end, but a speed test is only a part of it.

    Use:

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test

to get an idea what is happening.

and the bt speedtest (actually records any problems with bt so isps can use the data):

    BTW Performance Test

and you can use the ping command on your computer:

    Ping Command Details and Examples

this will help you diagnose packet loss (we had to do this before the customer service muppet would escalate the problem to someone who actually knew what they were talking about).

    Regards
    Dave

I have been using TalkTalk now for a couple of years and am generally quite happy with the service, unlike BT whose service used to go down all the time. TalkTalk are pretty consistent and the also the price is OK too. A TalkTalk speed test records about 9mbps although I never get an actual download speed much more than 1mbps which is anyway fine for my needs.
