Should i only send an email to a group of subscribers?

Hey,

I've read a bit about segmenting a list based on topics for example affiliates marketing, email marketing and so forth and only send out emails relating to those topics to each specific list.

Is there a benefit to this?

Since my emails take a bit to write (I send out stories and relate them to a marketing lesson) I just send it out to all of my lists as not to waste an email.

So even if a list might of been for a video marketing product I might send them an email marketing tip just incase they're interested.

I do this as I don't want to waste a sale even if its on a different topic than the one that they subscribed to.

Is this a bad approach to list building?

Is anyone doing it the other way and sending out only specific messages to certain lists? Have you seen bigger benefits?

Thanks!

I use extensive list segmentation whenever practical.

The benefits include having a greater message-to-subscriber
    match which boosts response rates.

If you treat everyone in your database the same, and
send them your messages 'just in case they're interested'
you will sub-optimize your lists long-term.

If you send a message out to a subscriber that they're not
interested in, they may choose to ignore your future messages
    - including e-mails on topics related to what they originally
    signed-up for.

Instead, I follow-up with subscribers on subjects directly
related to the original topic they signed-up for. If I have
a less tightly related topic I want to present to them, I'll
invite them to click a link or send them to a squeeze page
on the new topic to add them to a new sub-list.

Sure, list segmentation takes more time and effort, but the
benefits in increased response are worth it.

Most list owners build one big list and treat them all the
same - which is a BIG mistake. If you want better than
average results, then don't do what average people do.

Interesting. So the whole point of segmenting is to lengthen the life of the lead correct? And this will result in a happier subscriber and more sales I your pocket?

The whole point of segmenting your lists is to increase
the chances that you send the right message to the
right person at the right time.

It's all about being super-relevant in the eyes of your
        subscriber.

Once you go "off point" you risk becoming less relevant
(or even irrelevant) in the eyes of som subscribers which
you don't really want to do.

Absolutely. ( I use this 'list segmentation' technique in health niche.)

The subscription form has 3 checkboxes. So after subscriber subscribes, based on his selection(s), he goes into those 'sub-lists'. This way I can target information based on their interests.

I agree with what the other poster said above. It's important to send your emails to the right group of people. I would not advise building a list targeted towards learning about list building and then you sending them offers talking about Web Design. Stay relevant, it's the key.

    Hi everyone,

I was sending emails to all my lists and I think it was wrong

So list segmentation is very useful

    I wish you luck

If you really want to cross-promote your content between sub-lists, you can include a link to other content at the bottom of the email. Something like:

      ------------------
Here are couple of artcles related to Your interest '.....':
      Article Title:
      Link
      Article title:
      Link

If you want to add/update your subscription options, go here:
Link to edit the checkboxes options. (see my post above)

I use segmenting for everything including if they didn't open the email
If they opened it but didn't click through
If they clicked through but didn't complete my goal (doesn't need to be a paid goal)
This way you are sure that everyone that can read your email does etc

        all the best
