Default Ever Had THIS Happen While Writing An Article?

So you're almost down with your article(Yes, ANOTHER article)... and we all know everyone hates to write articles...

And your computer decides to crash..

Gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside!

What? No auto-save?

Or did your computer die?

There's nothing worse that doing something then losing it to have to do it ALL over again, there and then. Te main reason for me apart from it being 'tedious' is the fact that you worry it may not be as good as the first one.

I always hit ctrl + s all the time when doing anything, that way I can't lose... unless the computer catches on fire or something.

Write in Open Office and it autosaves. Actually backs it up online.

Back in the good old bad old days it happened to me several times. I still don't know why.

I would swear a blue streak for half an hour, spend another hour trying to find and rescue my work and then give up and start from the beginning again...lol

This is why I like Google Docs. Not only does it autosave, but it autosaves online.

I wasn't aware that Open Office did that as well. Is that automatic I wonder? How would I access these auto-backups?

I am super paranoid about that stuff too, since I've had a few HD crashes. I regularly save whatever it is I'm working on to a flash drive (maybe about every 30 minutes or every hour). And then a few times during the day I take the extra step of sending the current project to a remote location (upload it to a website, send it to a web-based email account, etc).

I think MS Office 2007 saves it automatically . You could reopen the saved content after you open the file again. But yeah, it happens to me when I edit the website files in notepad! (Used to Happen)

I'm on dial-up with an older computer and computer freeze (is that like 'brain freeze'?) happens to me often. I write everything on a document (frequently hitting save) first then cut & paste into whatever web form. Even, or especially, if I'm doing an Ebay listing because it seems something in the coding-or whatever-freezes up everything about 1 in four times, and I have to re-boot. Of course, it always happens after I've written the fabulous description! LOL!!!
Guess it keeps me on my toes!

Since I got familiar with it COMMAND 'S' is my friend. I do it all the time. Someone mentioned CONTROL 'S'. That one's probably for the PC. If you write in the authors area at EzineArticles there is an autosave you can turn on there.

Good thing to do with forum posts, too, if you are writing a long one.

Save 'em, if you care about the time & effort you spent in writing them.

Cheers!

Sometimes by Luk we can say that Auto-save is there,,,but most of the times...there's a risk of loosing all the material we have typed or written...yeh it had happened to me about 4 to 5 times..

I haven't had this problem once since I started using OpenOffice. Before that? Yech! I have lost a long forum post before by accidentally touching the little laptop mouse pad thingy... then you hit the back button and its all gone.

Oh yeah, things happen, and unpleasant ones, too... I once was close to a heart attack when my computer just went dead as I was finalizing a project I had been working on for the previous month (my hair rose I realized that I just physically had no time to do it all over again)... But in the end, oh the luck, it turned out to be autosaved...

I once had someone working for me, many years ago, who was inputting stuff into a spreadsheet. His CV said he could do it.

He was new to computers and we had to keep asking him, "Did you save your file regularly?"

He said yes and so no problem we thought.

At the end of the week on the Friday, there was a power cut in the building we worked in.

He turned his computer back on when power was restored and couldn't find his file.

It turns out he had done a full weeks work on his computer and never saved the file once!!!

He thought because it was on the screen it was saved. He simply didn't turn his screen off each evening. So it was all "saved".

Needless to say, he got a rocket up his arse and told that if he still wanted a job on Monday, he had to work over the weekend and do the work again in his own time.

Funnily enough, he managed to get all the work done again in the two days of the weekend, which had originally took him five days to get done through the week.

Not surprisingly, he didn't last more than a few weeks with us...He kept on making similar cock-ups and really was in the wrong job.

Yes, what a bummer!!

And the article is never as good the second time around!

As mentioned above, i now use OpenOrg with autosaves.

Yeah, I have had that happen also especially when I am REALLY into the project. I usually make it a habit to create a name and save the doc before I even start typing and then hit Ctrl+S frequently so I don't get burned. For me, it's not even a matter of if something will happen it's rather when so I just try to be prepared.

Write by hand on paper first, then type it out and flesh out if needed.

I wonder why the real lost arts of writing are put on the back burner.

Imagine if Moses was able to write the book of Genesis on a PC or MAC.

I sincerely doubt he would have written it as well.

There's something mystic or better said... spiritual about writing by hand.

It brings out even more and better ideas than impersonal keyboard taps.

And you don't need auto-save, CTRL or COMMAND S or back ups, well not right away, you can always scan onto your system wen done or xerox your stuff and keep them in various locations.

This is what saved my work when my 2 laptops were stolen a year or so ago.

Luckily for me, no one wanted my 100's of crappy hand-written sheets of paper, they took the laptops with all my cool articles, ebooks etc.

The hand-written stuff is what brought my business back to life in weeks.

Felt good. So, consider hand writing for 5 reasons...

1. It can help you write even better since it's the most NATURAL way to write.

2. No thief in their right mind would steal it.

3. No virus or freeze can destroy it.

4. Like anything else, if you made back ups you'll always get them to read again.

5. When you read back your handwritten stuff you get even more motivated.

Well these are my own reasons, they may or may not work for you.

If I could have hand written this first, I probably would have lol.... cheers

Used to back up to a server when I was doing real programming. Until the server harddisk died, and the tape backup screwed up and wouldn't restore. Not much you can do, but go and have a stiff drink and then start over. But it can never be as good as the original writing.

Nowadays, I use ultraedit which recovers what you were last typing.
