My website gets quite a bit of traffic that is labeled "direct traffic" in google analytics. But, i suspect that this traffic is not actual type in traffic, and is actually coming from links someplace.

Am i right about this? is there any way to check the source of this traffic?

  • Pvijeh,

Direct traffic refers to traffic that came directly to your site. So for example they may have came to your site via a book mark in their browser or by typing your domain name right into the browser.

I have noticed the same thing in my analytics. I get quite a high percentage of my hits through direct traffic and theres no way that people would be typing some of my urls directly into a browser. It seems to me that sometimes analytics is unsure exactly where the visitor has come from and so records it as direct traffic instead.

You are correct. A lot of iOS 6 Safari search traffic is being reported as Direct traffic. It has been a while since I read the reason why but I want to say it is because the iOS 6 Safari browser doesn't provide Google the data it needs to identify the traffic source. So it gets lumped into "Direct".

Google is no longer providing keyword data for users that coming via HTTPS. I guess Apple thinks that two can play that game.

That's true. Remember that if you send e-mail to your subscriber to use the Google URL Builder. Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmails are all HTTPS now...
