Can someone guide me toward the best way to set up a subscription website? Specifically do I need separate software besides using wordpress. Is there a good plugin that would do it for me? How about collecting a monthly payment through PayPal? Can you set up recurring payments or do you hope they resub each month? Last thing, on the actual website do I just hide pages and posts to make them only accessible to paying subscribers? Thanks in advance!

I had a small subscription website a few years back. All I did was create a subscription button with Paypal. Very easy to do. You can bill by weeks, months, years, make use of free trials, and other forms of customisation. You may want more bling than that, but it can be that simple.

Best way is very subjective. I use Wishlist Member for my own subscription sites.

Yes, if you are running a membership site, you should use separate software. I use Wishlist, as mentioned; there are plenty of other options. If you don't want to use software, you can redirect to 'hidden' pages, but that provides little to no security, someone can just share the link.

The software can connection with PayPal for the recurring payment, and you can directly create recurring payments in PayPal itself.

What you show to the public and what is for members only is your call. I like to provide good content on the free side, to give them a real reason to join and pay to become a member on the paid side.

Once the order is submitted to paypal, it will be recurring until subscriber opts to cancel it.

If you have one or few products, manual 'Papal' buttons are fine even with Wordpress. If you have more products, then you need a shopping cart like script to manage somany subscription products.

Thanks for all the responses. I will definitely look into wishlist as an option. It might be the best option to plan for growth

Budget isn't really that important, I just want to have it set up right the first time. Like most I feel this could become large but it is not going to be a complex subscription. Simply a monthly recurring fee and maybe a one time price for a year or something like that.

Wish List is what I use. Your pages would automatically be hidden from non-subscribers and payment via Paypal rebilled each month. You can create different levels too for different membership levels if you want.
