What Are the Reasons For Closing a Thread?

I have noticed that some threads are closed, any one knows the reason for closing threads?

A common reason is info posted in the wrong section - not everything belongs in the main section.

One reason could be threads asking about deleted threads :p

The sad secret to the WF that no one will readily admit to is that if your hair is a certain color, your thread may get deleted or closed.

I think one reason is when people in a thread are engaging in personal attacks and it just gets out of control.

    A few other possibilities...

    * An old thread is getting posted to repeatedly after some dumbass spammer bumps it back to the front page. I often close threads that are necro-bumped this way when the normal members don't realize they're replying to an old topic that's been dug up by a drive-by idiot.

    * It's clear the same arguments are getting repeated over and over.

    * We spot a thread that's a rehash of something that's been discussed to death in the past month.

    * The thread is going to go down a useless and damaging route, based on a consistent pattern in previous threads on the same topic.

    * It's in the wrong section and someone has linked to the right place for it. In those cases, we'll often delete everything but the OP and the pointer, and then lock the thread. This lets people know what's going on, and serves as a useful lesson for newer folks.

    * The thread has turned into a self-promo-fest, but there is some useful info offered before the OP (or hijacker) flipped the ad switch.

There are other reasons, but these (along with the earlier comments) cover the majority of instances.

You forgot the most common one Paul.
Where the OP thinks he's more important than everyone else
and keeps his thread bumped for weeks on end.
