Starting a niche site

12 replies
Hey guys!

I am happy to be a part of such an innovative and active community.

My name is Zachary and I got turned on to internet marketing after checking out smartpassiveincome.com. Before I really knew anything about making money online I kind of dismissed it as one of those 'too good to be true' ways of making money. I only did so because there is so much junk about making money online, and very little substance worth delving into.

Now that I am better educated and have an idea for what this is all about, I decided to start a niche site, yea!!

So my goal is to provide information for people and also monetize with ads and selling affiliate products.

I have my domain name and hosting all setup. I am using wordpress.org with bluehost.

Now I want to educate myself better on all I need to know about SEO and basically everything having to do with creating a niche site and making money from it...in detail.

Can you guys recommend some good, in detail books, that will help a beginner like me learn more about everything that relates to building a successful niche site?

Also maybe there are some websites, training programs or even just personal advice you could share with me as-well!

Thanks in advance!

Zachary

    You are on the right track getting things started. Niche sites are not all that hard to come by. Niches such as dating, finance, or health and wellness are still a powerful industry. I do considerably well in the financial industry due to the rough economy. Send me a personal message and I can give you one of my ebooks for free that can help you get started if you like. I usually sell it for $20.

    When I was starting out I subscribed to Russell Brunsun (sp?), Ryan Lee and Yanik Silver, all of whom will give you a bunch of free, how-to-get-started info if you sign up for their newsletters. You have a month or two to unsub if you want, so if money is an issue you can do that and keep the freebies. That's the fastest way I know to get up and rolling.

    I recommend that you start learning how to write copy. If you want to make some serious money online, there's no better way than by creating your own products and recruiting affiliates. Go to the copywriters section in this forum to start learning.

    That's an EIG-owned host.
    Just be aware that the "unlimited" part is very limited in the ToS.
    It's slow, they throttle, and it's not very good.

      @betterwhtveter, check your pm's

      @sushiman, thank you, I will look into him.

      @Joaquin, Thanks, I would love to eventually create my own unique products!

      @Kpmedia, could you elaborate a bit? Im not quite sure what your getting at. Excuse my limited knowledge, I am still learning.

      @Alexa, Thanks! that sounds like great advice to me. The niche I am building a site around is more something I have a passion for, so I plan on providing people with quality content.

      @shaolinsteve, thanks for the recommendation and advice!

      @ Isaiah, I appreciate it! I will definitely check it out.

      @StevieC, thanks, sounds like worthy advice.

      @Butters, Thank you!

    Personally, I'd suggest that you don't to put too much of your time and effort into trying to "learn SEO" or to attract "organic SERP's" traffic, for two main reasons: first, it's very precarious and makes your business Google-dependent, and any business that's Google-dependent is no more than one algorithm-change away from a potential accident (or even a potential disaster), as so many Warriors have been finding out over the last year or two, some of them to their very great cost; secondly, for me, search engine traffic has been uniformly the worst-converting traffic out of everything I've ever tried in 8 entirely different niches over the whole of the last 4 years - search engine visitors to all my websites typically stay the least time, view the fewest pages, opt in the least often and actually buy anything by far the least often. I admit I do get tons of search engine traffic to all my main sites (because high rankings for multiple keywords happen to be a minor side-benefit of the main targeted traffic-generation method I use to build my business) but I'd certainly hate to have to make a living just from that traffic, and I wouldn't even be cursing too much if Google de-indexed all my sites this afternoon. Don't depend on search engines for traffic. That's what so many of the people here (and in other forums) have done, who end up wondering where they've gone so wrong.

    If however you do want to read up and get a better understanding of what SEO involves because you may want to outsource it if you are in a position to do so, then I highly recommend reading up on the SEOmoz: Beginners Guide To SEO.

    If you can outsource that kind of work, it will save you from buying asprin all the time

    Great that you are asking for advice before you jump in...the learning curve is significant, pick a few people to follow and get moving though, don't get too tied up in learning every crook and cranny which leads to paralysis by analysis.

    Some guidance...

    1. Study top sites and decide on a business model you want to lead with... you mentioned affiliate marketing, creating your own product and advertising...you want to pick one to lead with. My advice (from experience) is to enter new markets with affiliate products to get a feel for your market and understand the "hot button" topics and products they will buy, then you can leverage that and branch out into your own products. We have used this system 4-times in our own businesses over the years to create 4 different lines of business in 4 entirely different niche markets.

    2. Decide how you want to build your platform...you want to produce content and aggregate content communicating with your market, will that be primarily through writing, videos, audio podcasts, etc... The idea is to build on your strength and passion - if you love writing then a blog + syndicated content is great, if you communicate better via video then a video blog + youtube can be very effective.

    3. Decide which market you will tackle first. As challenging as people make this, it really comes down to a combination of market research, personal interest/passion and commercial viability - when these 3 things line up you have a winner.

    4. Get your site and sales funnel setup. You mentioned your blog, you need that plus an opt-in page, a landing/pre-sales page (pre-sale page for affiliate marketing, a sales page when selling your own product) + an email follow up series + any bonus you want to give to your market as an incentive to join your list.

    These steps should help you get started...have fun, this business is a blast!

    Jeff
