Selecting Your Niche Day 1

If you don't have a website or an established blog your first step is to decide on a niche. A niche is a small subset of a market. For example: "pets" are a huge market, "dogs" a smaller market, dog food smaller yet. "Natural homemade dog food" would be a niche market. Here's another example Wedding - Wedding Apparel - Wedding * Dresses - Budget Wedding Dresses. And another Health - Lower Blood Pressure - Lower Blood Pressure Naturally- Lower Blood Pressure Naturally for Women. And another Jewelry- Gold Jewelry- Gold and Gemstone Jewelry - Gold and Gemstone Ankle Bracelets.

I've found that it works best for me if the niche is one I already know about or one I want to learn about. Don't get all tangled up in picking the perfect niche with no competition and lots of searches. Just get started. You can refine the niche as you go along.

Get niche ideas by going down to your local grocery store. Look at the women's lifestyle magazines and see what topics are popular. Saving money, weight loss, get out of debt, looking younger, and parenting are all evergreen topics. Remember to take the niche and narrow it. Get out of debt is a huge niche, how single Moms get out of debt is a smaller niche and more easily targeted. Or perhaps you might choose how college students can get out of debt, or seniors.

Go on the Internet and find newspapers' websites. Today, New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, and your local newspaper. Scan the headlines. What are people worried about? The real estate market fluctuation, protecting their money, how to sell their house in a down market, sports, and avoiding foreclosure are all exploitable niches. Go to Amazon and see the titles of the bestselling books. Look at the bestselling products in the category you're considering. These days Amazon sells just about everything.

Visit www.magazines.com to browse through a huge selection of magazine categories.

Go to Ebay and look at the most searched for items or the most often used keyword phrases. Or go here eBay Pulse: trends, hot picks, cool stuff and popular searches on eBay.com
Google Groups - One of the suggestions later on is to post on groups as a way to promote your blog or website. In this case look for groups with a lot of members in a broad topic that interests you.
Yahoo Answers - People post questions that can be answered by anyone. Look for topics that have lots and lots of questions posted. Or go to What's Buzzing? You Tell Us! Top News and More - Yahoo! Buzz for the most searched for topics.
43 Things is a site where people post their goals. You can get an idea of what topics are of interest and that can help you decide on a niche with a built in customer base.

Once you've selected your niche make sure that people are interested in buying products or services for that niche. Raising Discus fish may be a fascinating niche but if no one wants to buy products about raising Discus fish it's not a good niche to be in.

    Select Several Niches Day 2

Select several niches that appeal to you and that you're enthusiastic about or that you want to learn about.

Given the current real estate market avoiding foreclosure is a popular subject, but if the subject depresses you, you won't want to do the work necessary. On the other hand if you feel you're providing valuable information and helping people with a serious problem then avoiding foreclosure might be just the niche for you.

Don't choose a niche just because you think you can make money with it. And do yourself a favor and don't choose a niche that is medically oriented unless you're a nurse or a doctor. There's too much chance for misinformation and hurting people. There's a fine line between dispensing medical advice and providing alternative health care advice.

Even though you will be making money on the Internet reach out for niches beyond Internet marketing.

Make sure there are buyers in your niche. An easy way to do this is to use one of your keywords related to your niche. Plug it into Google and look at the advertisers or sponsored ads that show up on the page. If there are just a few it may not be a profitable niche for you. Key in "weight loss." There are quite a few sponsored ads. If advertisers are willing to pay to place their ads on the pages that show up in a niche that means there are buyers willing to buy.

Now think of the ways you'd search for weight loss information in the search engines. These would be keyword phrases. Long tail keyword phrases are usually 3 to 5 words. "Lose weight" is a keyword phrase, "tips to lose weight fast" is a long tail keyword phrase. Here are examples of keyword phrases:

    lose weight fast
    easy weight loss
    quick weight loss

    lose 10 lbs fast
    tips to lose weight
    secrets to fast weight loss

    secrets to easy weight loss
    weight loss tips
    fast ways to lose weight
    how to lose weight

The google tool bar has a suggestions drop down menu. When you key in "lose weight,"
Google comes back with the suggestions of:

    lose weight fast
    lose weight in a week
    lose weight quickly
    lose weight in 2 weeks
    lose weight quick
    lose weight fast and safe
    lose weight diet
    lose weight in a week
    lose weight fast diet

    Add the phrases:

    how to
    how can I
    how you can
    tips to
    ways to
    secrets of

to the shorter key words such as tips to lose weight fast and you have even more keyword phrases.

You can get an idea of the competition for a keyword phrase, or how many websites/blogs are using the identical phrase by putting the phrase in quotes.

lose weight no quotes has 23,800,000 with that phrase
tips to lose weight, no quotes has 545,000
"tips to lose weight" has 166,000
tips to lose weight quickly, no quotes has 456,000
"tips to lose weight quickly" has 763

Always check the competition. You want lots of people looking for that phrase but not millions of competing sites. For more ideas on keyword phrases you can use go to:
    https://adwords.google.com/select/K...ToolExternal

Look for words that have high advertiser competition and mid range of search volume. Those are words that will earn more Adsense revenues for you.

I keyed in "lose weight and these are the suggested keyword phrases: "quickest way to lose weight" has high advertiser competition and a lower search volume. If I put "quickest way to lose weight" in the google search with quotes I see there are 96,800 competing sites. "Tips to lose weight" has 166,000. "Lose weight walking" has 53,400. In this case the best phrase to use would be "lose weight walking."

You're going to use the keyword phrases you find as part of your promotional efforts.

      Day 3

Open a Blogger account. It's free. If you prefer you can set up a website rather than a blog.

Setting up a website isn't difficult once you know the basics. You will need to use a "what you see is what you get" wysiwyg html composer. Those work like a word processing program. What you see on the screen is how your web page will look. The html coding is done by the program.

The other alternative is to hire someone to design the home page of your site and one inner page. When you add additional pages copy the code for the inner page and replace the narrative with the new content. Save the page with a file name that includes the keyword phrase. Link the new page to the home page with the file name. This may sound confusing but once you've done it several times it's pretty easy. The easiest web design is to use two columns. The first column is the widest and contains the content of your page, the second column contains links to all the inner pages. You can also put AdSense revenue in the second column as well as the main column.

Each inner page just has a link back to the home page. That way when you add a new page you only have to add the link to the home page and not every inner page.

You'll need a domain and a web host. There are lots of places that will host your site for a reasonable monthly fee.

Use one of your keyword phrases as the name of your blog/website. If, let's say, Quick Weight Loss Secrets is taken. Put your name in the blog, so it would be Quick Weight Loss Secrets from Dee. If you already have a website you can skip setting up a blog, or you can set up the blog to drive traffic to your website and to provide backlinks.

A backlink is a one way link back to your site. These backlinks mean increased traffic to your blog/website. Google looks at the number of backlinks when deciding the pagerank of a page. Pagerank is Google's measure of importance of a website/blog and a web page. The more important the higher the ranking and, at least theoretically, the higher the results in the search results. You can find out the backlinks to your site by putting "links:your website url" in the search box at Google. So I would put in links:How to get a book published Authors Brian Hill and Dee Power for example.

Blogging is a website (don't worry no website skills needed) that you update every day or so with posts about your chosen subject. Visitors can comment on your posts for others to see. Live Journal, Blogger, Wordpress are just a few of the free sites where you can quickly and easily set up your blog. There are many, many, more blogging sites.

I like blogger because you're allowed to put advertising on your blog. Wordpress doesn't allow advertising unless you set it up on your own domain and host the blog yourself.

Before you set up your blog come up with a good bio. You want to establish yourself as trustworthy and knowledgeable about your niche. People are more likely to buy from someone they trust. Include a photo of yourself. Some experts say that it's perfectly okay to use a stock photo of someone else because attractive photos are found to be more trustworthy. If you're using your own name I would suggest you use your own photo.

There may be some exceptions. If you're a guy and your website or blog is about weddings, brides may not feel that you know what you're talking about. Or if you're obviously overweight, people may not believe your advice concerning weight loss unless you're in the process of losing weight or have already lost a good amount of weight.

Day 4 Time to for articles

Find a writer who will ghostwrite twenty 250 word articles for you. Ghostwritten articles means that the articles are yours to do whatever you like with after you've paid for them. The writer can't ever sell them to anyone else.

Budget about $50 for these articles. Give your keyword phrases to the writer to use in the title of each article. As the articles are completed have them sent to you in batches of 5. That way you can get started and not have to wait for all 20 to be finished. If you have never worked with the writer before you might be more comfortable paying 50% of the fee up front and then the other 50% when the articles are completed. Or pay for a package of 5 articles to determine the quality before you pay for all of them. Establish a deadline for each batch of five articles to be completed.

The ghostwriters below are offered as a resource and no particular recommendation is implied. These writers charge various prices, some of which may be more than the budgeted $50.

        http://www.aceinkslinger.com

There are a number of webmaster focused forums where you can post a "want to buy" (WTB) thread. WarriorForums.com and Digital Point are probably the most well known. Join both of these forums as they're valuable resources beyond finding writers. General membership is free.

Buy a package of at least ten 300 word articles with private label rights (PLR). Visit WarriorForums.com and digital point forums and pick up a package there. Budget about $8.00 for these articles. Different authors offer different types of private label rights. Make sure the PLR you get includes 'you can edit the material,' 'put your name as author,' 'use it as web content' and 'blog posts.'

        Private Label Rights can include:

        [YES] Private use
Learn from the materials but you can't do anything else with the content.

        [YES] Can be sold
Sell the content as an ebook and keep the profit. Set up an affiliate program and your affiliates can sell the content as long as you remain in control of it. You have to provide the download link and collect the money and pay your affiliates. Or you can use a program such as Clickbank which collects the money and then pays you and the affiliate.

[YES] Can be given away as an incentive

Use the content as a freebie to motivate people to sign up for your list. Or just give it away.

[YES] Can be packaged with other paid products

If you have other materials on the same subject that you're selling, combine the content and sell it all together.

[YES] Can be offered as a bonus with paid product

Give the content as a bonus when you sell a product.

[YES] Can Be submitted to article directories (follow their Terms of Service - TOS)
If the article directory says the content has to be 100% written by you, or you have to have exclusive rights to the content, you can't submit PLR content. You can rewrite it to fit their TOS.

[YES] Can be used as web content

        self explanatory

[YES] Can be used as an e-course/autoresponder sequence
Set it up as a series for your autoresponder or sell it as an e-course that's set up on an autoresponder.

[YES] Can be used as blog posts

        Self explanatory

[YES] Can be broken down into smaller articles

Break the ebook or report into smaller chunks and use those as articles, web pages or blog posts.

[YES] Can be combined to create longer articles
Combine shorter articles into a longer article. Or combine a number of shorter articles into a report or ebook.

        [YES] Can be edited.
You can change the content however you wish, as much, or as little, as you wish.

[YES] Can have your name put on them
Put your name on the material as the author.

        [YES] Can sell Resale Rights
Selling the rights to resell the content. The person you sell resale rights to can then sell the content without paying you any additional money. But that person can't sell the rights to sell the content to anyone else. Resale rights don't mean you can change the content, add to it, edit it, or put your name on it, unless these other rights are granted as well.

[YES] Can sell Master Resale Rights

One step further than resale rights. The person can sell the rights to sell the content to anyone else and they can then resell the content and so forth.

[YES] Can sell Private Label Rights

Selling the private label rights to the material.

[YES] Can be added to membership sites
The material is added to a membership site. There are several different kinds of membership sites. And some writers differentiate the rights based on whether the membership is paid or free. Or whether the content is informational only (personal use) for the members or any rights can be passed on to the members.

[YES] Can be offered through auction sites
Can be sold or given away through an auction site.

You could write the articles yourself but having them ghostwritten, or using PLR, provides a boost in getting started and saves you time.

Day 5 How to Write Articles That Pull in Readers.

Choosing topics: The easy answer is to choose topics that are the same as the website/blog you are promoting. Narrow down the topic so it's manageable in 350 to 400 words. That may sound like a lot if you aren't proficient in writing but the words will fly by.

Write as if you were talking with a good friend and answering her/his questions. For example: If you have a dog care website one question you could answer is "How do I know how much protein is in dry dog food?"

Handle one question or topic per article. Go to yahoo answers for ideas for questions. Go to article directories and see which categories have the most entries. Leaf through hard copy publications to see the topics of their articles.

How to use keyword phrases in your article
Use the keyword phrase in the title as the first few words of the title. Use it once at the end of the first paragraph and again in the last paragraph. Don't use it more than 4 or 5 times throughout the article. There used to be a rule that a good article, one that shows up on the first page of Google, uses the keyword phrase as a total of at least 10% of the article. That would mean that for a 400 word article, natural dog foods would be used 13 times. That rule, also known as keyword stuffing isn't relevant any more.

Duplicate content penalty is a myth as far as articles are concerned
Google penalizes for duplicate content but not in the way that affects articles. The penalty is for the same, or nearly same content, on a website or blog that is used to manipulate the search engines. The same narrative is used on different pages within a website with the only difference being the keyword phrase.

Duplicate content penalty doesn't apply to articles of blog posts. If it did, newspaper syndication companies, like the Associated Press, wouldn't use it. Here is what Google says about the penalty.
Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Demystifying the "duplicate content penalty"

          3 different methods of writing

Sitting and staring at a blank computer screen while you struggle to get started on your article can be frustrating. Here are three methods that work.

          1. Tell them what you're going to tell them. Tell Them. Tell them what you told them. In the first paragraph state what the article is going to be about. Make a list of 3 bullet points that will be covered in the article. Write a paragraph to explain each bullet point and why it's important. The final paragraph is a summary of what has been covered in the bullet points.

          2. State the problem. State why the problem is important to the reader. Provide a general solution. Provide a specific solution.

          3. Introduction of the problem. 3 or 4 tips to solve the problem. Conclusion

          Spelling and grammar are important

Using correct spelling and grammar is a courtesy to your readers. While just about everyone except perhaps, your high school English teacher, forgives a spelling error or two, articles loaded with mistakes take away from the content of the article. The mistakes get in the way of the information you want to convey.

Take the time to proof your articles. One way is to let the article sit for 24 hours and then go back to it with fresh eyes. If you're terrible at proofing see if someone else will do it for you. A clean grammatically correct article shows you value your reader's time and that they are important to you.

The importance of the author bio box

You've incorporated a killer keyword phrase in the title of the article, creatively used it throughout the article and given your reader critical content. Don't lose them at the author bio box.

Most article directories allow the author to use a credit box at the end of the article with a couple of live links. A good way to capture the reader and motivate them to click on your link is to offer a teaser of more information through the link. Another way is to offer a free report on the same topic as the article.

Spend a little time on your author bio box. Use it to establish your credibility as an expert. Be friendly. Build trust with the reader.

          Conclusion

So what are you waiting for? Get writing those articles.

Dee, your day 4 recommendation - outsourcing articles is spot on. When I first started, writing was my biggest stumbling block. I would takes an entire day to write one crappy article. keyblast said: "There was alot of information there, so maybe I missed the monetization part. How will the site make money? I guess for me, the niche selection, blog setup, article writing is the easy part. Its the actually getting traffic and making the money that is hard."

See it all works together. Getting the traffic is dependent on the niche and how you write the articles. It's not complicated but it does take some thought.

When I first started out I looked at article writing as if I were writing for a hard copy pub, thinking the title needed to be snappy, and ignoring search engines.

Did not work. People were not searching for the keyword phrases I used in the title. So the article didn't rank well. As in buried back on page three thousand or so.

What I learned was to use the keyword phrase that ranked well in the title AND a phrase that intrigued human readers.

Very good information. Something I'd like to add.
In regards to knowing your competition, keep in mind that some categories in Ezinearticles are so saturated that your articles will be buried before they've had a chance to get a decent number of views and will likely never be seen again.
So check the category out carefully. See how old the last few articles in the list of 30 are.
Once they've dropped off of that list only an aggressive backlinking campaign (assuming you've picked a keyword phrase you stand a chance of ranking for) will get them any more views.

Thank you so much for all of that helpful information

You really did a great job of getting into the detail of it which is awesome. Not a lot of people do that so thats for taking that time out.

    Much appreciated!

You've bought a package of 10 plr articles, split each article into 2 articles. Title each article with an appropriate keyword phrase. Add your own 50 word intro and a short closing to each article. Use your keyword phrase in the intro and closing. I bet you're getting sick of me saying "add your keyword phrase." There should be 20 articles. Start posting the PLR articles on your blog (or as pages on your website). Use your keyword phrases in the meta title of each post/page. Back date the posts over the last 40 days, one every other day. Nobody likes to read an empty blog so this gives you some content.

Submit the blog's url to google. You should have a blog on Warrior Forum. Post the url on your warrior forum blog with some content of course that is related to IM. You could also set up a free craigslist and usfreead account and post an ad there with a link back to your site. It seems to get new blogs/sites indexed very quickly. Some people consider that spamming.

Onlywire.com (socially bookmarking system) several of the posts. Use the url of each post itself rather than the general url of your blog.

Add a 100 word intro to the ghostwritten articles and a 50 word closing, that gets you to the 400 word minimum for articlemarketer.com (Isnare.com has a 500 word minimum so combine 2 of the 250 word articles.)

Every day submit an article to ezinearticles and the same article to articlemarketer.com Use your keyword phrase as the text link back to your blog/site in your author's bio.

Submit your blog to google to set up a publisher's account for AdSense. It takes about a week for approval.

Research affiliate products. Don't limit yourself to digital products on clickbank. Check out amazon for physical products as well. Once you've found your affiliate products add the code to about 1/3 of the blog posts or web pages.

There is still a lot of work to be done. But this should get you on your way to earning money.

When I started IM I had no experience. I did have a website that was oriented towards our consulting business. It didn't even have Google AdSense on it.

If I can earn money online you can too.

Great tips. These should get each newbie started. But after these 5 days it all depends on the individual (on how much work the person invests in his or her blog).
