For the people asking, "How do I get started?"...

One of the biggest and most frequently asked questions around the forum is "How do I get started?". Most people, buy a "Make money online" program, look through it half way, and then decide that it's a scam.

Virtually every 'Make Money Online' course, ebook, website, blog, etc. will explain that the goal of internet marketing is to have a system that will make you money, and will go something like this:
  • find a product or offer you would like to promote.
  • create articles promoting that product or offer.
  • get traffic to those articles.

Laid out like that it really looks simple doesn't it? But the process looks more like this:
  • find a product to sell.
  • set up a website targeted for people who want to buy that product.
  • entice visitors to submit email address for newsletter.
  • use an email autoresponder to send series of newsletters promoting the paid product.
  • set up a traffic campaign to get visitors to your website who want to buy that product.

Those 5 basic steps give you a powerful formula to make money online as an affiliate marketer. At the basic level, it really is that simple. That's why online marketing appeals so much to the 'Get Rich Quick' mentality. The problem is that "simple" does not necessarily mean "easy". Where it gets more complicated is in making sure each of those steps are done effectively.

This is where a lot of lazy people jump off the bandwagon and start yelling SCAM. As I said above, "simple" isn't the same thing as "easy". While the 'Get Rich Quick' books do overhype how easy it is to get results, it's still a fact that this is a proven system.

If you really want to learn how to make money online, you need to ignore the hype. I know some people will disagree, but breaking into Internet Marketing and being successful is really hard to do, and takes a lot of determination. It's not easy, and anyone that tells you otherwise is selling something.

I see too many people trying to just make money. They're only in it for the money and only want to make some sales. This is a big problem. Why?

No one comes online looking to randomly buy things. Everyone is looking for an answer to a problem they're having or looking for a solution to something. Remember.. your job is not to make a sale but to solve someone's problem and in turn.. that is what will make you a sale.

So what do you need to get started?

#1: You need a clue.

Anyone can search google for answers to making money online, but you've got to have an understanding of what you're doing or you'll always be running around searching for answers.

#2: You need a plan.

Brainstorm! You need to have a mapped out vision in your head of your business. Do you plan on purchasing a domain and starting a product on dog health care, buying domains and selling them, selling home made materials on e-bay, writing articles, etc. There are so many options out there for what you want to do, but you've got to have an idea and a plan before you can start making money. Brainstorm in your head and think to yourself..

"What am I good at?"
"What am I knowledgeable about?"
"What is something I really enjoy doing/talking about?"
"How do I plan on providing information on this product?"

#3: You need a website.

Unless you plan on marketing to forums and groups (which isn't a very well played out business plan) you need to establish a website. Before you start thinking "I have no money for a website". You can always start a blogger blog.

If you're looking at starting a website, I would highly recommend WordPress for the Content Management System (CMS) and Host Gator for hosting. The options of managing/running your website are great and at such a low cost, it's hard for me to refuse Host Gator when ever I plan on getting a website.

Hosting at Host Gator starts out at $4.95 so this is great for a beginner's website or just starting out.

Now comes the part I had trouble with when I began. Website Design/Website creation. I am not a HTML savvy guy.. believe me, nor am I a programmer. While I know there are many places where you can hire people to create your website, I believe everyone should learn to create their own material at one point or another.

You need a website with an easy design/layout because anything hard to read or something that doesn't look professional will have a much lower conversion rate than what you hope for.

Remember, when you're writing your sales copy/creating your product... you're speaking out to people that have a problem and are in need of a solution.
  • Make Money E-Book - People are broke.. who wants to be broke?
  • Train Your Dog E-Book - A loud and undisciplined dog is a danger to you and everyone around you.
  • A Guide To Smart Car Buying - Learn to save gas and to save earth

Do you see what I am saying? You have to speak to people in the certain niche you're trying to sell in, because you're trying to fix a problem someone has or answer a question that someone has.

In my opinion, fear and hype are two of the biggest sellers there are.

Trying to sell a vehicle? Examine your audience.. a young man will be interested in something fast and loud and will want to impress the ladies in his hot new ride. You have to know who you're selling to and get them hyped, because a hungry crowd always comes back for more. Look for "addicts" and cater to them.

BTW, I am not saying a website is the only way you will ever make money period, I am just saying that this is probably the best way to create an "automated" source of income.

#4: Patience & Consistent Action.

If making money online was as easy as snapping your fingers.. everyone would be millionaires.
So many people quit trying once they find out how much work is actually involved in creating an online business and being good at what you do. You have got to keep consistent.

You've got a killer website but no sales, why not?
Get inside your market's head and view your website not from your point of view but theirs. Do not think "how will this make me money" but "will this solve my problem"?

Be consistent and always add new fresh content and possibly new products to keep your customers/readers coming back for more. A hungry crowd can never get enough no matter how much they spend.

#5: Email Lists!

If someone opts in to your e-mail list.. chances are.. they're interested in what you've got or curious. A lot of websites don't offer a chance to opt in to an e-mail list and a lot of money is left "on the table" as a result. A lot of people who see a website once won't purchase something because they simply don't know the source. They say that someone needs to see a brand 7 times before they trust it, so the same principle applies here. Get your visitors to opt into your list and treat them right. Look up list building around the forum, and look up psychological triggers if you really want to make things interesting.

Remember that Internet Marketing is a marathon, not a 50 yard dash. If you're new to the game, then I don't recommend purchasing any products, because I guarantee you that a lot the information you need to get started can be found on this forum.

The more consistent you are, the more determined you are, the more it will show. Don't give up just because you don't "hit the lottery" over night, because like I said.. if making money online was truly easy, then everyone would be doing it.

Reading time is over, it's time to get to work.

And if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Most of the people that are making a lot of money at this spent many years getting there. There are lots of opportunities to make small amounts quickly, but building a reputation and clientele takes time.

Good advice and plan Dudeman. It cetainly helps to follow a plan.

I downloaded and read numerous giveaway ebooks when I started looking at making money online that my head was spinning. The best thing I did was to get a coach and follow a system.

      Who is your coach?

Can I get an online mentor? Will online coaching work? If yes, how can I know who is genuine and the right one for me? Could anybody please give me a few recommendations (online coaches)? How much I will have to pay? By the way, I am in India.

      And thanks TheRealDudeman

Most people are confused about how to start an online business, so they need a good mentor for starting the new online businesses.

And other way: trial error without a mentor. This is wasting time but get invaluable experiences.

I hear that a lot with many things. They say that about bodybuilders, businessmen, and any other specialty. I'm not convinced that it's a NEED, but I'm sure it really helps if the student is with the right mentor.

You just need one more "B" in there to have come up with one of my article titles. "Bodybuilders, Businessmen and Bacillicides" ... no, not quite right; "Bodybuilders, Businessmen and Batrachophobia" ... no, too obscure. I'll get back to you ...

Meanwhile, thanks for an excellent post.

I am this kind of guy. Besides I don't have money for mentors or gurus. I always try to learn what I am doing.
Since I am newbie, started this venture 5 months ago, my first site is one month old, another one will be live next week, I see that this is really a long and hard journey.
I will not give up, because I don't have any backup options to earn some decent money. The hardest part is going on when there is no results and no promises of success.
Well, I will have to stick in there, wait and see.

Interesting stuff and the truth too. It is a lot harder than most people would lead you to believe. That is what explains the over 90% failure rate. There are fortunately some places that still follow ethical marketing rules. The problem for the new joiner is finding the real gems as opposed to the fools gold. One way is to check what is being promoted and if there is really an ulterior motive. As opposed to the person offering genuine advice.

For the above reasons I have found that when starting Squidoo actually gets ranked quite quickly and their rules and modules let you experiment and all for free. The quests help give you topic ideas and you can learn about SEO and traffic getting strategies without having to pay anything for hosting or a product. Once you have mastered that to the point of making some money you can think about branching out into buying domains and looking for that perfect niche. You may be surprised and find that you do not need to. many Giant Squids are earning their living just off of their free sites!

In order for anybody to make money online and get started they first have to get into their mind that this whole thing is going to take lots and lots of work on your part.

You can't make money online by just pressing the mouse button 3 times and expecting cash to jump out of your computer screen. It doesn't workt hat way.

For starters, you need skills. Those folks that tell you that you don't need any skills and such are scam artists who don't know a thing about marketing online. Don't listen to them.

In order to make any money online, you have to do something in order to make that money. People just don't hand it to you.

You must possess the mindset that you need to work and work hard to get what you want out of this business because that's exactly what you have to do here. There's no ifs ands or buts about it.

So as you can see here, it all involves you taking affirmative action, learning the skills that you need to learn and then applying them to make your new business work. It will take some time before you succeed, but as long as you keep plugging away at it, it will pay off.

Yes it is not easy..most of new comer think making money is like a push button process, easy and without to face any failure...

Failure is a good loop point where it will develop our tacit knowledge in Internet Marketing...

Failure with teach you how to grow up again and how strong you are....

If you can't face failure and give up easily and blame the WSO you bought...you are not in the right mind set...

Funny you should mention dog training as a lucrative niche because it IS! I have found that specific breeds of dogs that are owned by their owners are passionate about their care and training. I make a consistent income from a pet training program because it is good information and they have an awesome follow-up sequence. One valuable thing I learned is that it is double effective to promote an affiliate program that has its own autoresponder sequence. Another tidbit of gold is that the affiliate program also puts in the names of the owner's dog in each email - GOLDEN because it is PERSONAL. At the end of the day, we need a personal touch in this impersonal world. All the best, Kristie from Georgia

1st and foremost, sorry to breaking in. Not like talking as an expert here, coz I'm still noob as well, but i do have story of how i made my online money using completely free website and free tools.

Maybe it could give some sort of insight. Sometime it all just begin with an idea -that's all-
(but have to underline, that i'm only talking about how i got money online, not about how i got BIG MONEY online, coz im not there yet).

Well started when i received free coupons from google adwords. At that time, i have no idea which site that i want to promote. But i decided to make a website using free platform : webs. com ; and created sales pitch about "making money through data entry"

I made the web for like 1-2 days. And made a campaign in adwords for it. After a month, i got more registrants than i could imagine. But the project i had in mind that time, was doom.

Years go through, and i still receive like 2 to 4 signup per day. But i haven't yet making money from it.

Till one day, I join this MLM online based company. And I realized I can make used all these registrants, finally. Contacting friends in the network, i offered them service of data entry. I said i have workers can do data entry like sending their ads to free ads website, and they agreed to jump in. So basically i took advantage by facilitating friends in MLM's network for their ads campaign and people who willing to type all the ads and get paid from it. I got my margin. And money filling my pocket right away.

You don't need to change your plans regularly, but you DO need to adjust your plans accordingly. Keep learning and tweaking. "Changing" implies that you're going all over the place. Stick to the fundamentals, and keep improving...not changing. Make sense?

There are a million different products telling you how to make money online and all claim to provide the secret to online success. If you are new to internet marketing or haven't made your first dollar online then read the first post and follow the plan that TheRealDudeman laid out. It is a proven formula for success.

Forget all the fancy stuff that is being sold on the internet. If you are new you need a simple plan to make your first dollar, then your first $100 dollars, then your first $1,000 and so on...

Stick to the above plan. Don't deviate and focus on doing each of those steps he laid out above, because that is a solid formula, not a here-today-gone-tomorrow tactic that won't work next year or next week.

Take Action and follow the plan. If you do, you will amaze yourself in what you you have accomplished 90 days from now!

    Wishing you a brilliant life!

LOL this is your very first post on the forum. It's quite a bit self-promotional, let me tell you. Be careful about how you conduct yourself on the forum.

Spot on mate, very well said!

I see far too many people asking the same questions over and over and cry SCAM the moment they hit an obstacle or fail to make 50k in two weeks. I'd dare say a good 80% of those who fail start that failure at the very first step, coming in with a flawed mindset about what Internet marketing is actually about.

Thinking like a gambler and wanting fast cash without doing anything for it won't get anyone any where!
Neither does running around trying to do ten different things in ten different niches!
Have a proper plan, stick to ONE method, and work consistently and systematically towards your goals!

LOL you should turn this comment into a thread! More people need to understand these truths. It sickens me to see how many people have this entitlement mentality, where someone owes them money just because they want it.

I get a lot of messages from people that are demanding that I tell them how to do what I do. Like really? I don't owe you a damned thing! Some people drive me crazy.

Hehehe thanks mate, you beat me to it with your own great thread, but I probably will make one as well, like you said, these facts need to get more exposure.

People need to understand that Internet marketing, even when working with it from home, is about running a business, not messing a round with a hobby and expecting the dollars to start flooding in after a few weeks.

I say do not spend any money for at least 60 days and just read free stuff and watch free stuff. Find out which avenue you feel you would like to go in. Do Not buy any Push Button Money Systems or anything to that effect. they don't work. It will take traffic and link building at some point. You can use tools to streamline the process but no automatic push button money machines.

One of the most important things when you first get started is to know your strengths and weaknesses. This is with pursuing any goal. This is not just about making money fast this should be about creating long term income quitting your job and so on. Well, I know it is for the majority of us so that is how I am approaching this thread.

Starting off right is important because if you know where you are when you begin then you can see yourself through to the end. If you haven't read any books like Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich I suggest you do or check out my hubs in link below. You should know what business is best for you maybe internet marketing, maybe creating products and having affiliates market them for you. I know a great tool if you or anyone else would like to know more info about it inbox me or keep checking my hubpages.

    Great post, OP, great post!

Focusing on one process and working your balls off on it is key, IMO. Get off lists once you've found a route in IM otherwise distraction will definitely set in.

Oh and something else I've learned, stop spending too much time here at WF - although it's a great place full of some great people, it can confuse and distract attention way too easily!!

Speaking from someone new like myself just starting out this post is awesome.

I have laid out a 7 month time frame to read, research, learn and actually do exactly what you posted. I treat this just like a job. Setup my own office, get around and dressed for work everyday like a real job and head off to my office So what if my office is in my home. I am in the mindset that this is a JOB and I MUST work at it like one to be successful!

SO TRUE... I have cut back to only an hour a day. As you said one can really get hooked reading all the great information here but that sent my mind into overload.

Thanks, pal. You've made some excellent points too. It's important for people to have an "information diet", which usually involves unsubscribing from any other lists that an individual might be on.

I haven't found the Forum to be distracting for me, personally. But I'm also pretty good about maintaining focus. I know that there are a lot of people that are easily distracted, and they'll spend hours wasting time on Facebook, Forums, ETC.

Thanks for adding those in! I should create an addendum to the post which includes all the new pointers other warriors have given.

The great thing with the internet is that things move so much more quickly. I think that it is a great idea to be prepared and to give yourself plenty of time to get going, but 7 months seems incredibly excessive. I can almost guarantee that everything you want to do in 7 months can be done in about 4-6 weeks.

JoeMack I hope so. But when I say a 7 month goal, that for me was hopefully being able to do IM fulltime by then. I have set up a REALISTIC monetary goal that I need to be at in 7 months to do this fulltime. Hopefully that works out for me. Hard work and my desire to succeed will hopefully be my saving grace. Time will tell.

LOL no, I don't think so. 7-12 months is a much more realistic time frame to work with. Of course, it depends on exactly what he wants to do, but he stated that he wants to make full time income within 7 months. No way that'd happen in 1 month.

Like I said above, I'd give it a year. 2, in all seriousness. There are a lot of folks that work long and hard for many years before they breakthrough. Persistence is important.
