**This is not intended as a self promotion but more of a cry for help**

I have a site which I put a lot of work in to creating and would like some ideas on how to market it. The site is a directory of known Martial Arts classes in the UK with over 2000 entries...

I have a decent list, maybe 500-800 but do not want to scare them off with OTT canvassing.

All opinions welcome...

here is the link to the site:

Are you asking how to market it? Advertise it? or monetize it?

I dont mean to be rude to be honest but you do SEO and you run an Internet Marketing blog, just a suggestion that maybe you may want to get some more experience under your belt before you offer other people support and suggestions for SEO and Internet Marketing.

Secondly your looks nice, clean and professional however it seems hard to use form my own opinion. So even if you did get traffic what then? Its not easy to search if its a directory. Directories should have big bold and in your face search buttons and category and location based clickable browse links.

Also how are you monetizing apart from adsense, will you charge for listings? And if so then are you talking about marketing your services to martial arts businesses or the listings to users?

If you want to target users i'd be going full steam ahead with SEO and even some offline ads. If you want to target martial arts schools I would cold call.

I would recommend guest posting on blogs of UK martial artists, or even better, blogs on how to learn martial arts. I guarantee that some of the people on those 'Learn to' blogs are from the UK.

I am not sure what your purpose is, but are you looking to make money on it, or get more traffic. If it is money, you need to recommend your subscribers products that you are affiliated with that relate to martial arts such as amazon associates products are easy to get.

If you need traffic, participate in forums related to martial arts to give advice and write blogs to educate your subscribers and other people who may search for your blog topic on google.

OK so it looks like you have a store as well as other paid ads. Now we just need to know if you are targeting businesses to get listings or end users to use your site?

This is advice that you must follow if you wish to be successful. To get traffic you must simply focus on participating in the forums in your niche and writing engaging content to your website visitors. To make money, you simply must build a list and market affiliate products to your subscribers.

Got some bad news for you...

This site isn't going to work. Here's why...

Do you know who your biggest competitor is? It's Google. Google can do everything your site does and MORE.

Why would someone go to your website? When someone could simply type in google: "Boxing gyms in...(city) " and get a full list of businesses and websites with reviews right on the page instantly.

Unfortunately your site reminds me of the yellow pages. The idea behind the website is totally backwards. Maybe 10 years ago this kind of thing would of worked when search engines weren't so detailed, but nowadays it's pointless. There is good news though...

You aren't very far into building it so you can easily forget about this one and move on to something else.

      Disagree totally with you here.

Google is a database AKA search engine. That is correct.

However based on how and where he advertises of course he can make his site become a very strong niche database and listings website for that particular niche.

There are so many reasons I can think of.

Firstly and simple with the amount of content he ads he will out perform most martial arts websites as well as other general directories and listings websites if he chooses the right keywords. Unfortunateley your theory does not hold up based on what we know about SEO.

Google simply compares one site to the other or should I say all the others for the keyword being searched. Google doesnt care about anything else so the ability for him to rank his site for keywords such as "Karate DoJo's in South London" is very very likely.

The only thing I can think of that he needs to consider is competing with places listings.

Then there are other things such as his webstore. Tell me google sells boxing gloves, please.

He could even use the merchant center to rank his products.

Also because he specializes in martial arts, why is it do hard to believe that he could A) collect more listings then what are currently online and B) actually make money from those listings?

Do you know of any websites that follow this business model that are actually doing well right now?

It's a terrible business model because your in direct competition with websites like google and yelp.

Do you know what most people do when they type in "Karate DoJo's in South London"? They look at the little map that comes up on the right side of google or the listings that display different businesses and all of their information is right there including reviews.

What is he going to offer that would be better than that? Why would someone go to his website to see all that information when google gives it to you right from the start?

And who the hell would buy boxing gloves off a martial arts directory website?

Would you ever buy products off a directory website?

The amount of work that would be required vs the pay off makes this just a complete waste of time.

Your argument is valid however I still disagree.

I mean, you can give a loaded GAT GUN to a senior citizen and ask them to shoot it at a cardboard cut out 10 meters away and still have them miss or nor even get it going or you could ask an experienced marks man to use a dodgy BB gun and see how many he gets point black in the 50 point head shot region, then watch him walk away with 1500 points.

My view is that the web is slowly being niched out.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm with this guy. Sell it on flippa now and never go into the niche again. Sell it with the list though, you'll get some bank from it because people like to buy sites that have list associated with them, that's what I've been told and have seen anyway.
