How much influence does adding tags to my WP blog have?

How much influence does adding tags to my WP blog have? I have been adding all the decent search volume tags to my articles. But I am wondering just how much influence these tags have on my placement.

I frankly think i am wasting my time entering in these tags, and Google etc. will place me where they choose, based on the words in my article. Yes, no, maybe?

Inquiring minds want to know.

    Which tags are you referring to? Title tags? Keyword tags? Description tags? Keyword tags (i.e. sidebar or footer tags)?

    Currently, Google doesn't place much value, if any at all, on meta keyword tags. Yet, other search engines do...Yahoo is one of them.

    If nothing else, tags help visitors and search engines get a good idea of which keywords you are ranking/trying to rank for. And the subject matter of your content.

    It's hard to tell what Google will do based on your keywords, especially with ongoing algorithm changes. I think you nailed it though--Google will put you where they choose. Based on a variety of factors that continue to elude us!

    They're great for visitors to find articles from your own search, but Google won't place much value on them. Include them. They take 1 minute to add, and even if Google won't put too much interest in them, and small percentage could help!
