How much can I trust Google adwords keyword tool?

Hi Warriors,

I am intending to start an international modelling agency web site. Initially, I thought that I will get my website designed similar to Newfaces.com (A modelling website) with some modifications.

But, when I used Google keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com), I find that the keywords the most searched world wide related to modelling are "How to model", "Be a model" etc. But for these 10 similar keywords, the number of global monthly searches shown are 101,000,000! How come they all have the same exact number of searches? So, clearly there are errors in the google adwords keyword tool.

Also, when I googled, "How to model" in google, I found that the first web site indexed is howtomodel.com. But, its alexa ranking is only 4,356,528. Now, the alexa rank of newfaces.com is 142,673 - clearly 30 times better than howtomodel.com as per alexa ranking.

Yes, I know that alexa ranking is also faulty as they consider only those hits made by users who use the alexa tool bar. But, still, all these don't match.

Ok, now my problem is to decide the most appealing theme to be adopted for my website. How could I do the theme research / keyword research properly? Is google page ranking important? If yes, will someone please explain the same?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Cheers

Perhaps I am not getting any answer because of the poll. How to remove the poll?

The Adwords's results are not always accurate.

I always to use the "exact match" to get more accurate in the result.

If you get the first spot (instead of the first page) at Google for a targeted keyword, maybe you will get 40 - 50% traffic from the exact match search per month.

There are many factors that cause the results are not accurate 100%, Google dance, demography, behaviour, trendy, demand and more.

There are different ways to actually do keyword research.

You need to check the competition in quotes, title , check the page rank of your competitors, check the authority sites if there are any.

    Alexa hits- it means nothing.
    Alexa rank never really matters.

I have bots which continuously give hots to my site , lower dwn the alexa .
But do this helps me in conversions or SEO?

    No, no No.

Apart from adwords keywords tool, use market samurai, traffic travis for finding golden keywords with low competition and high search volume.

Theme - Buy a magazine kind of theme to showcase portfolio and all.

    Themeforest has many magazine themes.

Two things. The GAKT gives an AVERAGE of the previous 12 months.

An example an exact match search for the keyword phrase "world series 2012 tickets" shows in your BROWSER as 1,300 searches. But if you DOWNLOAD THE CSV file it shows ZERO searches for the past 4 months.

Also it's only the data for the Google searchengine. There's all the other searchengines, facebook, twitter, youtube, other blogs, press releases, etc. that can also throw the numbers off. On peak months the search numbers will be low, and even if it bottoms out to zero you'll still see thousands of searches with your browser.

The Alexa rankings are skewed for some things. (make that three)

Thanks a lot for all the replies.

Let me make myself more clear. When I used the word 'theme', I meant the topic of my website. That is if i choose my domain name to be "sreehowtomodel.com" instead of "sreeinternationalmodels.com", I have to make a lot of changes in the main focus of my web site. I will have to work harder and bring in a lot of quality content.

But, my confusion is - is it worth the time and effort? How much can I rely on google keyword tool to select the main topic of my website? Unfortunately, I lost my credit card and due to some pressing time consuming needs, I cannot now get the duplicate card (I am in another city far away from where my bank is located). So at present (perhaps for the next 1 month) I cannot buy market samurai.

so the real question is should it be "sreehowtomodel.com" or "sreeinternationalmodels.com"? I am going to start the designing of the home page and the database for my website now onwards. (This is my student project also for the course I am doing (Diploma in .Net - NIIT).

I will do the registration & hosting later only. But, still I want to decide the topic now itself.

Cheers & thanks a lot for your time. May God bless you!

Sreejish, your domain name doesn't decide the topic. If you go with sreehowtomodel.com or for that matter klunkers.com, the topic is decided by the content!

Whether it is worth your time and effort can only be decided by how much traffic you can bring in, and more importantly, HOW you are going to monetize that traffic. (Assuming earning is your goal here!)

There are 100's of other keywords that you have not researched. You really think people only search for those 2 keywords? Of course not, find more keywords with less competition.

    I'll advise this:
    1) First of all, research A LOT of keywords for average searches (GAKT), don't think about whether it's wrong or not, just use it as an "average searches" tool.

    2) Once you have a keyword list, check each of them in google after clearing your browser's cache and cookies. Check the competition, are there are authority sites in the top 5 places? (Authority example: about.com, wikipedia, etc.)

    3) Mark the keywords that do not have authority sites in the top 5 places and ensure that they have monthly searches of at least over 500-700.

    4) THEN you will automatically have your topic to write about. Create a lot of quality content around those keywords, don't go crazy over optimizing, just write great content, link it from good sites (twitter/fb/pinterest/web2.0's/etc.)

Now once you have a decent site with at least 25-30 articles (pages) on it, and it's at least 2-3 months old, you can then analyze your rankings and start pushing some links to it and see how the site advances.
