Wordpress MU 2.7.1 or Wordpress 2.7.1 ?

Hi fellow worriors,

I have heard about the Wordpress MU for sometime over the years now, but I really never touch it before. While the ordinary wordpress has always been a useful CMS for people like me, who is not good in html, design, css, and all those techie stuffs, I read that Wordpress MU is quite useful in some other cases.

Thinking of building a new site a while ago , I was trying to get a handful information about the Wordpress MU. But only find out that it could be a harder thing to use, not to mention about the complexity of installing the tool itself.

What I am trying to do is, building a general keyword website, and then search for some niche products around the general keyword. Take trading as the general keyword, and my fictitious site name would be example-trading.com ...

Using Wordpress, and if I were to add a new subdomain of the word 'forex', then i can get the result of forex.example-trading.com site done, right ? (and I think I would need to install 2 different wordpress CMS too, one for the domain, and another one for the subdomain)

But using the Wordpress MU, I can easily add a new page of 'forex' into my current domain, thus making it forex.example-trading.com . I can add as many 'subdomain' as I want, such as stock.example-trading.com , and so on.

Now my main concern is about the installation of the Wordpress MU. Since I am not a techie person, and I don't understand any php stuff, I think it could be a hard task for me.

Are there any warriors out there who have been using Wordpress MU for making sites ? Can you plase shed some light on this matter ? By the way, I have been using wordpress for some time now, and I am quite comfortable with it. Wordpress MU is totally a 'stranger' to me. Any help would do.

Thanks for that.

MU is more for people who want to build a site like wordpress.com where people can come in and sign up for a free blog on your domain. It sounds like what you want is just simple blogs, so the regular edition, installed multiple times, seems like a better solution. It's more flexible in that you can install more themes and plugins very easily. The install process is also much easier (especially with fantastico).

    I run MU.

If you can install the normal WP, you can install MU.

The only problem I had was with the links within the sub-domains
    leading to 404 errors.

I use HostGator and I filled out a support ticket and they did
something on their end that made it work.

It's very easy to use once installed though and not much different
    than WP.

The only other issue is that the templates reside at the main level
and can't be edited at the sub-domain level. If you're using a different
theme for each sub blog then it won't matter but if you want to use
the same thing and make changes to individual sub blogs, you can't.

My work around was to copy and rename the original theme. Doing this
I could use specific templates for each sub-blog. While all derived from
the same theme, I may have different advertising according to the niche
    on each one.

As long as your theme is widget ready, you shouldn't have to worry about
that though as you are able to modify the sub-blogs with these without
    touching the actual code.

Before I took the plunge, I spent a little time on YouTube watching
some videos on MU. You can see first hand how it works and helped
me to make the decision to give it a go.

After all, you can always remove it and go with a clean WP install
later if you find that it's not what you wanted.

    Good luck

I was platying around with WordpressMU last night... I'm trying to build a "community" website ala Facebook. I was doing this from asubfolder in one of my websites as a test, but I just didn't know how to install it.

    I'm a ColdFusion/SQL guy... not PHP/MySQL

So I'll do some searching today to find out how to use it, and if I come across a nugget or 2 of good info I'll come back to this thread.

Wordpress isn't really a "community" software, and nothing like Facebook.

You should look at elgg.org instead. That is much more like Facebook than Wordpress.
