Default How Can I Block Google Completely?

How Can I Block Google from indexing my site Completely?

As in, I don't want them to index ANY part of the site, the subpages, files, etc

It's a private site that private people will have access to.

Thanks.

Hi,

Create a robots.txt file with...

User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /

upload it to your root

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but why would one want to block the biggest search engine from indexing your site?.

You can also go into Google Webmaster Tools and find the Remove URL tool to completely block your site. It takes a week or so to de-index your site, but it'll be blocked for good.

I was having this same problem before. There are a few different ways to do this, check this article out Blocking Google - Webmasters/Site owners Help it should do the trick for you.

I like how the very first reply answered the question most completely and with the simplest solution, yet the "peanut gallery" just had to add more posts lol. This forum kills me sometimes!

I think that it is great to get a number of different options.

A simple solution I used a few years ago on two sites was to allow the index page to be indexed and all other pages were in a folder that was password protected. Worked like a charm.
