Why Did It Just Cost Me $80 To Renew a .TV Domain?

I just renewed samcrowley.tv via GoDaddy for $80.
Yes, you read that correctly - $80.

I am not an Internet marketing guru but nonetheless feel I have my pulse on the basics of Internet business. Obviously I have lots to learn about the cost of domain extensions, not all are created equal.

Please help me understand....

Thanks,

Sam

Yes, It was tough to swallow but the long range plans for my personal development business involves an online TV show. Had it not been for that, I would have said good-bye to my .TV domain.

Don't buy .tv domains. Even GoDaddy admits they're becoming obsolete. You do realize you can do the same thing with any other extension, right? The extension is supposed to give ppl a hint at what the site's about, but it doesn't dictate your content and the search engines don't actually care much about it. Quality is quality to the SERPs. All other things equal, a .com is actually favored over any other. I shy away from using anything other than .com, .net, or .org.

Boy .. after Godaddy had a 9.99 sale on TVs when they first came out, I bought a bunch. I'm very glad that I let them all go. I wouldn't pay that for a TV unless it was an extraordinary TV ... like maybe Reality.TV

    Hi Sam!

.TV is a country specific Top-Level-Domain extension (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu. As the country owns it, like any other commodity they can set their own rates. They lease the .TV extension to registrars for a fixed price (I believe in this case it's $50).

That's way to much to pay. I just renewed several .tv domains
at enom.com and paid 22.00 per year each.

namecheap.com has them at 17.99 per year.

The problem is, I don't believe it's possible to transfer a .TV name from one registrar to another. Sounds wild, but I remember reading it somewhere.

I think .tv may be one of those gTLDs that allows variable pricing (something the .com registries have tried to get). In other words, they can set the price not at a one-size-fits-all rate but rather based on the estimated value of the domain.

It's a setup that allows the registries to make additional money on premium domain names.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I concur. I remember trying to register a .TV domain and getting back different price for different domains. Prices went into the hundreds and possibly even in the thousands then not sure if they still do.

Some people have done some really great developing with tv domains, but all in all, I would not buy any of them again. I don't see many of them in the Google searches that I do, but I know a lot of people bought them and then didn't develop them. Caught up in the big TV hype and Godaddy's big sale on them ...

    Couple of reasons:
    - to keep spammers and domain squatters out
    - Increase the perceived value of the extension(extensions like .info or .biz are seen as having little value because they're so cheap)
    - .TV is actually a very nice top level domain for branding purposes

You paid $80 for two years, not one. Makes it a little easier to swallow, I guess.

??? Can you get regular domains with "tv" in them; or does the domain have to be ".tv" to be tv? (For example: www.mydomainnametv.com ???)

The short answer is Yes, you can get a domain with "tv" in it, but what do you mean "to be tv"?

Yes and so is .com .tv may be useful in certain very specific niche situations,
otherwise who remembers it. What is a punter likely to remember www.yoursite.tv or www.yoursite.com ?

...and then there are the search engine preferences, or so it is claimed.

So I try to be creative with a .com or .net domain name instead of getting involved with, what are in my opinion, the "also ran" suffixes.

          Just my thoughts,
          Jeff.

I don't use GoDaddy for domains. They disable your sites after eleven months, and when you renew, they don't fix them straight away.

They also went on and on last year about how Yahoo hikes up the price of renewals, yet they now do it themselves on certain domains.

Sam, don't know the answer, but how long was the registration for. I recently did a renewal with godaddy and when I got to the payment section they wanted me to renew for 5 years so it was expensive. They tend to default everything to 2 years, so you have to be careful when you renew.
