Top Tips for Launching a New Blog Community: Getting to the First 1,000 Subscribers
In 2013, my newest online venture is to create a real online community. While I know a lot about entrepreneurship, I am starting from ground zero when it comes to building a genuine platform/audience/community of loyal followers who you can help and who can help you spread your message and your brand.
What is the Best Way to Get Your First Subscribers?
The most challenging part is figuring out how to get enough followers to join your community in the first place. As with any business, once you get past this tough initial hurdle, the momentum builds!
I wanted to start this post to gather some great tips and strategies for getting started. What are the best ways to go from 0 to 1,000 real subscribers interested in what you have to say?
5 Audience Building Strategies When Just Starting Out
After researching and speaking with some top experts on audience building, here are what I believe are the 5 top strategies that can be used to get going.
1. Blog Commenting on Relevant Blogs. This is a pretty popular strategy and it must be done consistently over a period of time to start seeing results. I have had mixed results with it, but I have found that COMMENTING TO A COMMENT works better because there are already active commenters following that thread.
2. Guest Posting in Relevant Communities. This one will be the most effective because you are gaining exposure to large communities of your target audience. The key is to find the ideal blogs in your niche that allow guest post submissions. Then write an amazing post to wow their audience. If you find an ideal blog that does not have a guest post submission, see if they have accepted guest posts in the past. If so, then start participating via comments and then reach out via email with a guest post topic proposal.
3. Targeted Facebook Ads. Find groups and pages on facebook where your target audience hangs out. Then, set up a facebook ad and target it just to those people that are in those groups or who like those pages. The key here is to come up with an ad headline that catches their attention.
4. Hiring Influencers to Post on Your Blog. This is the reverse of guest posting. Reach out to bloggers who have "medium" sized communities and offer to pay them to post a good article on your blog. And make sure that the deal includes them tweeting and posting on their social media pages that they have posted on your blog. This is a great way for their community to come to your blog. The key here is to target bloggers who have a decent sized community but are still small enough that they want exposure. Another key here is that your blog must look professional - so they are comfortable being associated with it.
5. Buying Exposure to Existing Email Lists. Believe it or not, many bloggers will sell you exposure to their email list. In exchange for a fee, they will agree to send out an email to their list of followers - and most of the time you can draft the email! This approach is known in the industry as solo ads, but you really need to be careful where you buy solo ads. The better approach is to find existing blogs and communities where they sell this exposure option directly from their site.
Those are my top 5 tips and ones I am going to focus on as I launch my blog.
