Hi folks I thought I had a hot fresh domain name and didnt check for like ones . So as it would happen its not as original as i thought. My domain ends up being the plural of an existing domain that was purchased back in dec 2008 and from what I can gather is sitting dormant rite now . for example lets say my domain is thebigpigs.com and I find out after the fact that thebigpig.com already exists. Should i put his one on the shelf or go ahead and try to work with it. I currently own about 5 domains and have never ran across this before. I dont know if there is legal and or professional curtisy I should follow here or not. thanks |

If the non plural version is not a trademark or anything I say go ahead and develop it. If the other is just parked, it might stay that way. Could be someone looking to sell it for more down the road. Even though you have an "s" on yours, if the other one is not developed or does not get backlinks driving it yours can just shoot above it. |

If the domain is just parked, you likely have nothing to worry about. It is a bigger problem when there ends up being a well established site with a similar domain name. Really there are millions of similar domain names. So it isn't much of a problem unless the other site happens to own some trade marks that apply to your domain. If you insisted on only completely unique domain names, you would be searching for domains forever.

my suggestion is to put his on the shelf, because it creates confusion. People have the tendency to remember the shortest name.

I wouldn't use it either. You don't ever want to lose ANY conversions. Find another one, there are a ton out there.
