Get conversion stats BEFORE opening to affiliates?

For those of you with infoproducts on Clickbank...

Do you suggest getting conversion numbers for your sales page first, before adding the product to the marketplace and opening it up for affiliates? Or instead letting affiliates be the guinea pigs and get conversion numbers from them, and THEN tweak accordingly?

I've heard suggestions from a few that one should do all this testing first, before trying to recruit affiliates.

If you were to approach me with a proper business case and conversion stats, you would certainly increase the chances of me agreeing to work with you.

I think this is a recipe for disaster.

In your position, I'd be wanting to ask affiliates, more than asking other vendors.

"Disaster City" comes to mind ...

The reason you should avoid this is that you might ("would"?) go to all the effort/energy of attracting affiliates and then lose the best ones, because they find their epc's are below their thresholds. And you won't manage to get those back.

Attracting affiliates is one thing; retaining them is another matter altogether.

    This.

"Conversions before traffic" is the rule of thumb, here. You need to have the whole sales process pretty much refined, tested and proven before you start looking for affiliates. The alternative is potentially wasteful of the limited pool of serious pro-affiliates you hope to get (and keep) promoting your product.

Thank you both! That's what I thought.

Since I don't want to "ruin" my chances at getting and keeping good affiliates, do you think it is OK to use Clickbank as just a payment processor during the testing period, keeping the product out of the marketplace, and then when ready adding it to the marketplace?
