Payment To Philippine Workers

I'm thinking about outsourcing some of my work to Philippine workers but am wondering what is the best way to pay them. I hear that Paypal is a hastle for them to open an account. Does anyone have a payment method that works well?

You just need a different merchant - I believe Xoom are good for all concerned. MY understand is that they have higher fees so you will have to check that out...

It's great if you can accommodate them as they're more likely to stick with you longer term, and if it makes no difference to you, then it's definitely worth it.

If they want to get paid they will figure out a way to get the money. Choose your method and let them deal with getting an account. Did any job you ever have ask you how you wanted to get paid? Nope, they just wrote you a check and had you figure out the rest.

    • Payments.ph is reliable and Xoom is really fast. They're both pretty convenient. In fact, I get my salary through payments.ph. I use a debit card to get my salary and I can even use it for electronic banking. It's not as fast as Xoom but the fees are better compared to Paypal. Paypal charges a lot of fees and the exchange rate is pretty low. I know a few workers who often end up getting a lot less than what was agreed upon with their employer or clients because of the exchange rate.

And another thing I don't like about paypal is their lack of customer support for Filipino customers. If we have problems with our accounts, we have nowhere to turn to. And I really hate the fact that the local banks affiliated with paypal charge a ton of fees and paypal can't seem to do anything about it.

Yes, I'm ranting. I really don't like paypal. I know it's convenient if you live in the US or Europe but for us here in the Philippines, it sucks.

How much does PayPal charge you to pay Philippine workers? Do they charge a percentage or flat fee?

Paypal is fine, last i check it's free to link up with a Union bank account here.

Xoom is also ok to use, just use your bank account to keep the fees at $5 per transaction.

I would prefer using paypal to pay them all the time.

If you are outsourcing your work to them to be done for the internet, i don't see what's the issue for them to open a paypal account.

opening a paypal account is not the issue. it's linking it to a bank account to withdraw it is sometimes problematic unless they know how to do it properly. paypal doesn't issue a paypal debit card to the philippines.

Why you din't hire them through oDesk, elance or other platforms ?

This will protect both of users and gives them flexibiltiy to withdraw there earning using there own chosen method.

    Thanks

      I agree with Pingsters.

You should go through oDesk rather, I have following reasons to support my statement.

      1) There are more then 1 million Philipinos on oDesk. How ever you have to see how much are there meets your requirements.

      2) If you have already make the deal with any out there, You can push contract them in oDesk.

      3) oDesk charge 10% but they worth it as they gaurente hourly contracts specifically and have a great dispute system.

      4) oDesk offers hourly contracts and weekly payments which automatically deducts from your account and is subject to be disputed.

      5) With oDesk hourly contracts you can double check their work in real time for the hours you have been billed with random screenshots, activity level, cam snaps and alot more

As @pingsters mentioned, if you do not have a company and are working with remote freelancers, it's highly suggested that you use a dedicated platform such as oDesk, Freelancer, Elance, Fiverr, Guru, etc. They have systems set up so that you can easily track jobs, status, and payments.

Your freelancers can also sign up for this service, and all the sites I mentioned above provide payments via Payoneer, which is fully supported in the Philippines.

If you still do not want to use Odesk, Elance or any other platform, than you can pay them using Payoneer.com or Moneybookers.com. Mostly Philippines workers work at Fiverr or Odesk and they choose Payoneer or Moneybooker for receiving payments. Very easy to create account and both payment processor charge very low percentage.

I had a VA from the Philippines and I paid him weekly using Xoom. Most of the time I had no fees but that's because my wife, who also lives in the Philippines, had codes that lasted the entire month for free transactions.

Paypal is a pain in my opinion and my VA didn't much care for it either. I know it can take a while before you can transfer money from your paypal account to your bank account. So if you want to be good to your people find the best solution for you both. With Xoom you can transfer directly into someone's bank account.

PayPal payments is a little bit easy now here in philippines now because we can now use mastercard/visa for verifying and widrawing on paypal. We only having trouble verifying our PayPal accounts on latter years. You can use western union too when paying filipino workers.

I do not understand why anyone would want to pay the 10% fee to oDesk or the other agents when you can pay directly with Payoneer, Payments.ph or Xoom and the net to your contractor is better ?

Payoneer is the least expensive to use and Payments.ph is second best with a fixed rate regardless of amount sent

I agree with the rest, it is way better to hire them through a freelancer website : odesk, elance, or freelancer ( unless you worked with those freelancers before ).

I worked with many freelancers from philippines, never had a problem paying them with paypal ( however, if you pretty sure of them, you got many options like moneybookers , or payza)

Just saw a site in Australia that allows transfers where the user is paid into their bank account, maybe there is some service allowing Filipinos to transfer money online similar to this Fundfone.com service? It all boils down to, how often you'll pay them I suppose and the charges for sending the cash and also the conversion rate too.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines and I got paid through paypal by my client. Paypal is working very well here. There shouldn't be a problem on your part, you can pay the fees or let paypal deduct it on the payment you sent them. If you're paying them 200$ per month, then they're going to receive the amount left when you deduct 3% from 200....The hard part is connecting the paypal to their union bank account then when they transfer the money from paypal to their bank account, it will take 3-4 days! Meaning they can't get the money immediately after you sent it. That's the hassle on their part.

Hi! I am from Philippines and I find no problem using Paypal here. Paypal is the easiest way for us Filipinos to receive payment. You may also try using Western Union to pay them but I think it would be best if you stick with paypal and it would not be a hassle with you too.

Well, paypal is the best way. But if your filipino worker is having trouble with it (I don't think so they would have trouble) then pay directly to their bank accounts.

Also, bank accounts here in Philippines offers a link to Paypal so it's not a real hassle.

We own an outsourcing company here in the Philippines...I'm here in Davao now, actually.

As others have mentioned, PayPal works just fine if your VA has a PayPal account.

Xoom used to be fantastic, but they've been shutting down accounts that are using their services for "commercial" use, unfortunately...careful there.

Someone else mentioned a bank transfer to BDO for only $5. If your VA has a BDO account (one of the most popular banks here) that should work just fine.

You can also take a look at RemitHome - Their currency conversion is great and the fees are low.

If you say you are going to pay your filipinos $300 per month, do you just put $300 into your PayPal Send Money request and they get $300? Or do they get $300 less bank charges?

What is considered the norm, if you are paying $300 per month. Do you pay $300 or $300 plus whatever fees they would incur?

The best way to pay them is through a freelancer site.

In that way the money will be kept in escrow until you're satisfied with their work and then once you release the money to them they can then choose from the freelance site withdrawal methods

We employ a lot of great folks in the Philippines and I've had no issues sending them their payments via PayPal (where I cover the fees), and through a bank transfer either (there are no fees to them in this case, the bank charges me a conversion and forex charge, but that's on me). Since we are in India, I don't have the option to do a wire transfer, so I've got no experience there.

Ultimately, they get the exact amount that we agreed to. I've never found anyone who has had a problem with either PayPal or a bank transfer.
