Smart Living Company / SMC

I am wondering if anyone here might happen to be familiar with the marketing tactics and techniques that Smart Living Company (formerly SMC) suggests to people that become members with them.

I am wondering because I have been a member with them since 2005, and have since that time been trying to make the system work for me.

It's because of them that I got interested in creating websites, which in turn lead me to start studying eBay.

It's also because of SMC and eBay that I've spent a lot of time in the past trying to learn everything that I could on how to start and run a successful business and be an entrepreneur and it's because of them that I spent a lot of money buying numerous books relating to sales, marketing, e-commerce, and business management.

How much money have you made from their "program" in those eight years.

I tried to get product from them in the early 90s. It was mostly junk and though they claim 95% in stock, I never had an order arrive that wasn't at least 50% out of stock.

Just another supplier of cheap China junk, with a clever cover.

Really? I was an SMC distributor for years and found most of it to be high quality merchandise, particularly their porcelain and collectible type figurines. I rarely had something come up as out of stock, either.

OP, I'm not sure what advice to give you as I did much better with the products with direct sales and with swap meets. The bulk impulse merchandise was pretty good for a while. I had several stores that I kept supplied. I did a party plan for a while which worked pretty well, but it got to be too much for me, since I don't drive.

I did much better when I focused on just 2-3 product lines and not trying to sell a bit of everything, though. I only stopped doing this when I moved as my new location and not knowing anyone basically meant starting over from scratch. I just didn't choose to do that.

So far the only thing that I have sold from them is a pot and pan set through Craigslist. I got into the business with them in 2005 because of the high pressure sales tactics that they used on me. I wanted to have them create a website for me back then, but I couldn't afford it. Because of help from my mother we did have a website created through them.

I personally don't know what to make of their products, but from what I've seen I think that they are good products. What I'm trying to do at the moment is drive traffic to the website and generate sales with it. I'm getting some traffic to the site, but not enough and so far no sales from the website.

SMC does list a number of different money making programs in their money making manual that I think are pretty good. Getting going with it all is the hard part.

Just so that I could try to get money coming in I've even tried to sell their products on eBay as well, but everytime that I list on eBay it just sits there and doesn't get any bids on the product listed or sales of any kind. The only thing that's been happening to me on eBay is that the listing times out after the set number of days that I specify for it.

I don't know too many people where I live because I've either been driving truck over the road and unable to go out and meet people in person or the people that I have met in person have either been liars or have a stigma about meeting people and getting to know them. Trying to get past that stigma isn't very easy either from what I've noticed.

I know that it may sound crazy to the uninitiated, but I'm one of those people that tends to believe in Robert Allen's concept of creating multiple streams of income. I personally think that he's got a great concept there with that.

    • Hello Everyone,

@Rdonovan1, we’re many of our members have had great success marketing online with their own retail website, on eBay, and beyond. More people are shopping online everyday, so it can yield the kind of results you want to see. As you found out, though, eBay is an extremely competitive market. We suggest studying successful sellers’ tactics and pricing, watching their auctions to see what sells and what doesn't, and perhaps readjusting your approach to online auctions.

You’re absolutely right to say that getting started is often the most difficult part. Online marketing isn't as simple as just having a website; you need to have the right tools working for your site to ensure it gets noticed by potential customers. We hope that you have great success selling your Smart Living Company products with your eMerchantClub website, and remember that you can always call your Advanced Marketing Representative if you have any questions or our free Technical Support team (1-877-384-4691).

@Tina Golden, we are happy to hear that you found our merchandise to be high quality and in stock. We have been busy streamlining our product lineup, our image, and even our membership structure and we are very proud of the direction the company is headed. We even offer a free membership now, so you can get a discount on all of our merchandise without having to pay dues or fees! If you’re no longer a member, we’d love to have you come back and see what’s new.

      @RogueOne
Our company and product selection has gone through a huge metamorphosis since the early ‘90s. We’re sorry that your experience with SMC wasn't what you had hoped for, but we invite you to come back and take a look around at Smart Living Company’s new merchandise and company outlook. If you’re interested, you can sign up for our free “Buyer’s Club” membership that will give you access to our entire merchandise lineup so you can see for yourself that we have improved immensely since your time as a member of SMC.

We value all of your opinions, so let us know what you think. Thanks!
