Using LinkedIn to find a Marketing Job

Hey Everyone, here's a quick summary:

I've never really used LinkedIn. I became somewhat familiar with it a while ago with a WSO called The Missing Link, by greig wells (I think). Really that just taught me how to find clients using LinkedIn. Well it was a great program, but my area was heavily saturated with it, so I paid it no mind. I graduated in December 2012 with my Bachelors degree in Internet Marketing. I'm very diverse on IM knowledge. SEO, Web Design, Email Marketing, Branding, Reputation Management, PPC, Landing Pages, Analytics, etc.

What I hope for.

I understand how LinkedIn works at least in it's basic form. But I'm looking to find a job in the Internet Marketing field. I have a career advisor who told me to use LinkedIn to find a job. I've got an awesome resume, and know how to sell my personal value when in front of someone. But:

My question is this.

What do I do with my profile to get people to offer me jobs, or to find jobs? I should be able to get a 60K job with a little effort. The IM field can be very profitable offline too.

Why I'm not getting Offline clients?

Truth is, i'm tired of working from home. I live with my parents (I'm 20), on a dirt road with super slow satellite internet. I want to make the next step into the world and get my own place, then start getting clients.

Thanks for the help!

Start a personal blog. Post your knowledge of Internet Marketing once a week. Post in your blog about you and your life. Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest. Brand yourself.

Give it some time if you do it right in one year you could be on cruise control.

    Hope that helps.

    Hey man,

I know where you are coming from, I've been there too. But first of all, please set your expectations. I don't know how things are in Maryland, but here in California we have some of the highest salaries in the nation and I can tell you FACTUALLY right now I would never give a new graduate 60k a year. There are so many graduates that are talented out there that want to come in hungry and take a job, I can reserve that 60k for one of the recent hires that proves themselves and earns that promotion. So... just be sure your salary expectations are in line because to me they sound off. No offense, but I do hiring myself and this is what I am seeing.

ANYWAYS - to answer your question. Definitely fill out your profile and highly relevant, factual experience. Highlight your expertise and talk about projects you worked on that directly impact your performance "out in the field" if you were to get a job.

THEN - once your profile is set, you need to find the people you would want to find your profile on LinkedIn. Recruiters, hiring managers, whomever. Find these people first. Then - see if you have any 2nd or 3rd link connections to them. If you, ask your contact for an introduction. People are always willing to play rainmaker so chances are you'll get that introduction. Guess what? When someone does, the person you want looking at your profile WILL look at your profile because they'll say to themselves "Hmm I wonder why my friend wants me to look at this guy..." and click through.

I agree on the salary part. I'm not exactly looking for 60k starting. But the ability to get it within a few months. They'll see I can be worth the 60k, i just want to be at a place that is willing to reevaluate at least once a year for my salary, or for promotions. All i know is, "Internet" specific marketing degrees are still pretty scarce.

I'm not too sure how the job market works, as far as salary and reevaluations. IM is such a diverse field, I could be doing something so small as email marketing for a large corporation or running campaigns for another IM company.

Here's why I've been hesitant to run my personal blog. There are clearly a zillion article ideas that could be written about. The issue I have thought of is this; isn't any information I can write about already out there?

Also, who do I start following? People who are hiring? People who have related skills locally? Just follow these people and begin to write articles? Link them from my profile to my blog?

I landed a well paid job with a marketing company by just doing some affiliate marketing on the side, creating a P/L spreadsheet and forecasting sheets. It almost dosn't matter if you lose money, it's the initiative and the willingness to try and learn that employers really look for.

Start a blog, detail your knowledge talk about subjects and the industry as a whole. Also if you can afford to do little case studies. Once you have a few of these case studies, actually produce a print portfolio you can take to interviews.

I used this strategy to beat 40 people to a highly desirable IM job.

    Good luck.

    Hello grey38,

You're right about topics being talked about over and over again, but the quality articles are different in the sense that they talk about those same topics from a different perspective, give a unique angle on the topic, provide your own personal experiences with those topics, etc.

In other words, no quality article is the same as another quality article, even if they are talking about the same topic. Therefore, you CAN write on those topics and use a different perspective, your own personal knowledge and spin on them, etc. to make them valuable to your target market and show that you ARE an expert in IM.

Additionally, there are newer topics that don't have nearly as many topics:

    Social media marketing
    Mobile marketing
    Media buying
Relationship marketing (this one isn't talked about as much as you would think - it certainly hasn't been called that, even if some of the concepts have been talked to an extent)

Therefore, there are also newer topics to populate your blog.

I agree with those that say that you should start your own personal blog (and I'd add using social media marketing, article marketing, and forum marketing to help get the word out about your new blog). It's relatively cheap to do, you can great exposure, and help to brand yourself as an expert. Then, it's more probable that one of the more established Internet marketer will notice you and be willing to reach out to you, possibly even with a job offer, especially if you show him both your degree AND ESPECIALLY your analytics from your blog - prove that you are capable at Internet marketing.

Hope this helps - good luck in getting your career going!

    Take care,

    Hi,
Linkedin is a great tool. Best way to use linkedin to get a job is to have your header as something like - Internet Marketer - Looking to get hired. Then in the summary again stress looking to get hired and sell any potentional employer your key skills (maybe in bullet form). You can upload your cv and link to it within your profile.
After you've done that I'd look at joining groups that have key personal that you'd like to approach. After joining these groups you can message key members and just say hey sorry to trouble you but I'm interested in working for you.

    Hello Grey,

LinkenIn is the best place to find a good job in any field. What i can suggest is to look for the people in your field and try to increase your network. The best way to do it is to just send them a message and add them in your friend's list.

Another very effective way is to find the recruiters as there are hundreds of them there and add them in your network. The best thing about them is that you will be the first to know of the new jobs in your area as they advertise them in their profile.

Joining different LinkedIn groups is also a very effective way. In these groups there is a job section where different people advertise jobs all the time. Its all about searching and finding the right place.

Frankly speaking i have find myself some great jobs on LinkedIn in the last few years and i highly recommend it to everybody. These are some of the things i usually do myself and they are pretty effective.

One more thing you can do is to look at Craigslist in your area and in the surrounding areas ... I usually see lots of advertisements for marketing jobs there. If you are willing to move anywhere then it will become really easy to find marketing job.

Lastly, as far as the pay is concerned, If i am a new graduate and looking for a job, then i will not be concerned about the money i am getting as at this time of my life i want to learn as much as i can. This learning will be more precious then finding a well paid job as this will help you in future.

Best of luck in finding a great job

    Best Regards

    Hi

Its good that you have a little knowledge about Linked In. The most important thing is you must fill all the rewuired feilds and thus completing your profile 100 percent.

Add skills, add people to your network including your new and old friends. Join groups send invitaion and try to participate in group discussions as much as possible.

You can also join job seeking groups. I have been using Linked In for more than a year and I think it has great benefits. Not only you meet new people but you will learn many things.

Best of Luck with job hunting!

    Find jobs on LinkedIn

Look up companies that interest you, ask for introductions through your network if you find 2nd or 3rd degree connections. Warm up these connections to learn more about the jobs you're looking for

I'm gonna do this. I'll put 10 articles on my marketing site. Enough to prove Im diverse in IM knowledge. Then continue on my personal blog. But link an area on my marketing site to read my personal blog for more IM knowledge.

    Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I'm not sure that Linked In is *necessarily* the best way to go about getting a job - although I won't argue that it will help.

To me, proper networking and connecting personally with top marketers would go a lot further. Find out where the top marketers hang out - could be at a workshop or convention, and make sure you're there, with a business card that has your website which has detailed info on your academic background and other relevant pursuits.
