What is an email list and what do you do with it?

I seem to keep running into guys at the gym that are involved in SEO or Internet marketing and the one question they always ask me is "have I built a list"... What exactly does this mean? Are they referring to an email list of clients or people that have purchased products from me? If so, why is an email list of clients important?

What gym do you go to?! Haha

I go every single day and not one person knows a thing about running websites and I end up doing Q&A sessions at least once a week lol

    ANYways...

Your list could be what you mentioned (a client list) or even people who are interested in your product or service who may not have bought from you yet.

It's absolutely vital for long term business growth!

You have to figure which route is easier for you:

    Generating a new customer

    or

    Gaining repeat or referral business

It's proven time and time again that gaining repeat and referral business from a happy, existing customer is much easier than generating new business. Not just in online marketing, but car sales and pretty much any industry where selling a product is involved.

I sold a car after talking with a customer for weeks and they brought me 2 new customers without me doing a thing, resulting in a ridiculously large paycheck.

Without building my prospect and customer database, I wouldn't have been able to make any of those sales.

Back to IM, it's vital to grab an email marketing service and build a list of potential customers. Then you can convert those prospects into customers which you store on a separate list.

Follow up with that separate list offering more value and when you have a new product or service, you can offer it to them and your sale rate will definitely be higher.

    <joke>That will be $97 please.</joke>

Thanks for the answer. But with the item I sell there really isn’t “repeat business.” Or if there is, its extremely rare. People come to my site for one thing only. Once they buy it theres no need for my service again.

I told this to one guy and he said that the list of emails is still valuable but didn't explain how. He was overcome by being so out of shape lol.

In Internet Marketing, the most important factor to online success is to build a strong and massive list. With a list, you can promote products/services to them and literally print money on demand.

Even if you sell a product one time, the list could still be useful for a few things

        1) You could send consumption emails, eg something like. Hey, Have you seen Page 7 yet where I disclose some "ABC" tip to "XYZ"

        2) You could send related articles etc, or send people to your blog (with some monetization there)

        3) Review & Recommend complimentary products

Hm... of course I don't know much about what you do, so all I can do is relate it to what I do.

I focus my business around one main product, but there are countless supplemental products that I could offer current customers. These products aren't necessary to make the first one work, but they can add to the benefits.

These occasional supplemental offers drastically increase revenue.

Also, when I provide helpful content through my site and the people on my list share it, that builds new business I couldn't reach before.

Again, I'm not sure what you do but this is why it's vital for me.

most probably they are referring to an email list. but a list of phone numbers and contacts in general is also a list. A list is just a database.

Yea, I’ve never read those threads before lol. I always assumed it doesn’t relate to my niche (which is a very small segment of the automotive niche, but targets a huge audience focused on just one thing). And I never receive their email address until they actual make a sale, they never come back again after the sale is complete. I have roughly 75,000 emails though.

One guy mentioned that I should attempt to sell them something (via email) totally unrelated? Does that make sense? Sounded borderline unethical?

You have a list of 75,000 and you're not marketing to them?

You shouldn't try and sell them something totally unrelated, where would the sense be in that? Sell them something related to what they bought first, something people interested in your product would be interested in. There must be something esle these people are interested in.

With an email list you can keep in contact with people and give them multiple opportunities to buy your product. The leads you get, the higher your chances are at getting multiple sales per day, and the higher your chances are at getting more traffic and boosting your conversion rates.

trade4861 If you specialize in one non consumable product you are selling yourself and your business short. There is always repeat business to replace, compliment, enhance, improve, and etc... You ask for minimum amount of personal information to send free info or offers of their interest.
The fact that they give you this info signal a willingness to do business with you.
You get this repeat business by staying in touch with your former and/or prospective customer.
By doing this you build a relationship with them and should you come across a related item(preferably) or some unrelated item you which to sell them. They are approachable because of the trust from your previous business with them and the contact to update them of your business ventures.
It is ok to specialize but I fail to recall and single item that can support a business without the threat of becoming obsolete.

If you sold some automotive product send follow up email and communicate the changes the industry is going through.
Diversify your business by finding automotive affiliate program you can relate to, it should fit with your niche.
Occasional, send some offers or coupon you find in those affiliate program on any automotive related item.

Hey trade4861, have you considered putting together a quick pdf report, maybe 3-5 pages, talking about the main benefits of your product and how to use it?

You can offer this report for free to your visitors in exchange for their email...so you're 'building a list'.

That way, people who aren't ready to buy can read your free report and purchase your product whenever they're ready. You can also send these same people a coupon code or some other reason to purchase.

This type of following up will dramatically increase your sales. I was able to take a site that was making $500/mo to a full-time business generating well 3-5K/mo by using this same strategy (offer free reports and followup with people).

      All the best!

Another thing I've done on one of my ecommerce sites is to offer my visitors a '10% coupon code' in exchange for their email...

Many people end up joining my list to get the coupon code, and then I gently follow up with them reminding them to use the coupon code and what are the benefits of my product.

Either way, I highly recommend that you look into putting together a quick & dirty short report about your product and start giving it away on your site.

Here is a question though, how do you formulate an email to send to your past clients that doesn’t end up in their spam folder. Just asking because I get hundreds of spam messages in my email address from IM’rs that I never see.

You can avoid the spam folder by finding out the email's 'spamassasin' score or something similar...basically you just get the email's 'spam score' and send it out to avoid the email filters. You can get spam scores for free from a variety of websites such as Aweber and many others.
