Webs vs Wix I want to create a website, I do not wish to make money on it, I just want to make a popular website. The site will be something between Ask Men, CKM, FHM, Sports Illustrated. Which platform, builder, hosting, editor is better, Webs or Wix? |

Re: Webs vs Wix I just launced my website using WIX, It is great except SEO. :) superaffiliatekorea.com |
Re: Webs vs Wix I agree with Jeff Sommers on this one. I think WordPress is the way to go. |
Re: Webs vs Wix Wix has two different types of site available, made with two different site-builders. The "Flash" one is bad for SEO (as they themselves advise). The HTML-5 one is perfectly alright. |
Re: Webs vs Wix Wix is good for fashion, photography, art or simple portfolio websites. I find the loading time to be extremely slow for e-commerce sites. I have never used Web but after having experience with Wix, never again. Like others, I recommend wordpress or joomla.. |
Re: Webs vs Wix I cant understand why anyone would want to build something on someone elses property. Makes absolutely no sense. |
Re: Webs vs Wix My advise is to create a own website, just with your own hosting and your own domain name. Why? Simply: there are a lot of people (users) on Wix or Webs. And all the users can create content, doesn't matter what. If someone builds a very, very bad website (and there are a lot of on these platforms), you are gonna live on their 'success' (not). So if I was you, I would buy a domain name on godaddy or hostgator. After that, be sure that you register the hosting at hostgator. There is a one click install service and you have your website up and running in seconds. (one click install for Wordpress and other CMS systems, I recommend Wordpress) Hope this is good information for you! (a thanks would be nice if so ;) ) |

You're looking at Wix as being "like using Blogger", Johnny, aren't you? I don't think it is, at all: I look at it as an alternative to Hostgator, not as an alternative to Blogger. Wix is just a hosting company (and a good, longstanding and very reliable one) that happens to have a built-in site-builder provided (a choice of two of them, in fact). Their terms of service (unlike those of Blogger, wordpress.com and all the other places I think you're thinking of) aren't significantly different from those of any other hosting company. You own your own site at Wix just as much as you do at Hostgator. The difference is just in the site-builders provided. (Clearly one should register one's own domain-name, of course, and redirect the DNS there, just as one does for a site hosted anywhere else.) I think you're looking at Wix as "not safe: you don't own your own site there" just because Wix will allow people one free site and/or because they'll give you a free subdomain if you want one, just like Byethost and Freehostia and other hosts do? I think whether or not a host is "safe" and "you own your own site there" depends on their terms of service. "Just saying". :o :) Quote:

Clearly, if hosting at Hostgator, one shouldn't register the domain-name there as well. http://cdn.warriorforum.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Quote:

But in my experience there's no site wich is EVER been hacked. (on my account) But it's easy if you want..! For more secure you can install it by your own.. :) |

The majority of people that host at wix are most likely (not all) going to be complete beginners, that dont understand what theyre getting themselves into. Also, Im talking about running a real business, not just posting up some blog about how to bake cupcakes. You dont build a house then invest in landscaping and an inground pool, only to return home one day after work to find your house has been levelled because you didnt own the land. Even if hostgator booted my account, I can be up and running in a matter of hours elsewhere with another host (including ALL of my videos). Most people creating sites at wix probably wouldnt have a clue. |
Re: Webs vs Wix hi there I dont know why so many weebly and Wix threads coming up. haha Weebly actually, until i mentioned Wix in the other thread, suddenly this one popped out. I use Wix and they are great.. If i want to maintain the site myself, i will host it there. Cos i know nuts about html and coding and stuff. But i haev to confess that if i want it in WP, i will still use Wix or weebly to design the layout then get my developer to do it similarly in WP. :D Quote:
The more you use, the more layers of "risk" you take because you are not in control. I am on this with you. But to be fair to Alexa, lets compare apple with apple, same level comparison that is. When thinking about hosting or domain registra, everyone gotta buy it from someone/somewhere, a 3rd party. So doing in on WP then hosting it on hostgator is a 3rd party. Doing your web on weebly / Wix then hosting it with them is also a 3rd party. Both are hosting companies just that they have different marketing angle. Wix offers easy site builders. WP is more technical if you want a nice looking site. Quote:
With Wix and Weebly you can back up your files and upload with another in just as quick as you would else where. And the same can be said to someone who is using hostgator but didnt back up his files. Just my opinion on this matter. =) |
Re: Webs vs Wix I personally have used webs for my first site which generates between $100-$300/ month. I also bought my domain name with webs for a year. |
Re: Webs vs Wix I've used both wordpress and weebly and I do think people get a little dewy eyed when it comes to wordpress. It's much harder to use than Weebly It's famed for it's flexibility but most people never really need that functionallity. (95% of wordpress sites would get by just fine on Weebly) Many wordpress sites are agonisingly slow to load It's security is fundamentally flawed. For example, how hard would it be for Wordpress.org to limit the number of login attempts maybe send an alert to the admin email account after the billionth login attempt:rolleyes: Everyone says that it's free. But when I look at my wordpress hosting fee vs the cost of using the weebly site builder(which includes hosting). They are almost the same price. So why do I use Wordpress? Well mainly because I like the look of the themes better it's just so much easier for me to make a custom site that doesn't betray my design ineptitude Cheers Don |

I understand that Blogger, is. I understand that wordpress.com is. I understand that Squidoo and HubPages and Tumblr are. About all of those places I agree totally with all your observations above. Because of their terms of service. But how is Wix in this category?! Quote:
Your initial comment "I cant understand why anyone would want to build something on someone elses property" applies equally to both, surely? I'm not asking because I'm trying to pick a fight with you, but because I genuinely can't understand the point you're making. In what sense is Wix "someone else's property" any more than Hostgator is? http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/fr...smiley-013.gif Quote:
