And I'm a little sad.

Goodbye Geocities after 15 years of free newbie hosting.

I knew ye well.
I remember ye flashy graphics.
And blinking text.
Goodbye ye old friend.
I didn't even know you were still around.

Wow, hadn't heard that. It's a little like hearing about the loss of an old friend as that's where I got my start online. R.I.P. old friend.

Wow, They also closed down MSN Groups. I was on there for a number of years. Nothing stays the same. Everything changes

Yep, as the saying goes, "the only constant is change"!

Evidently not - or not enough to justify the continuation of the "free" services.

Bear in mind that that the majority of service providers are a business, they can only provide free services if these generate revenue in one form or another (such as advertising) or if the other areas of their business generate sufficient revenues to fund the free services.

Think of the donations to charity made by large businesses - it gives them good publicity and helps good causes. They can only make donations however, if they are earning the money to enable them to do so.

      Just my thoughts,
      Jeff.

Just like any software, it comes and goes. Yeah it's the end of an era. When I think about those years, it was really a long time ago! Better and more improved web-based applications emerged since then.

Of the 12 remaining GeoCities users, only one was available for comment. "Holy crap!" said the user, a red-faced fellow named Strong Bad. "The scroll buttons and animated GIFs on that site were unbeatable."
      Truly sad...

I'm glad they closed it down. I had been getting anywhere from 25 - 50 spam emails from their members every day selling male enhancement products and $800 credit to join a casino.

Is it weird that I feel a little sad about this, even though I never even had a geocities acount

Do you think Geocities will suffer this fate if they are bought over by Google?

Wow, little saddened. Can't help but have those feelings of nostalgia, as my first site ever was built at Geocities in 1993.

I don't believe it. Not a word. It's a myth, like links at FFA pages not getting you to the top of Google or traffic exchanges being a complete waste of time. You people are so easily duped. Geocities IS the World Wide Web. C'mon. Use your head.

I had an account the year they started. I can remember it taking me hours to upload my cheesy graphics w/ my 14.4k modem. I also remember finding one of my first sites there just about a year ago. It cracked me up to see some of the crap I'd put on my webpages. Ahhh What a life! - You'll be missed! - not
