I'm just looking for inspiration for new retail sites. What do you think are the hottest designs for merchants, which also run well?

I'm looking for a little variety, not the classic OptimizePress Sales Page.

Am looking forward to your suggestions

I would worry much as about "hottest", think more... "proven & tested."

Stick to what works when it comes to design wise.

People say "ugly" works best.

What they really mean is "Nothing flashy, and keeping things clean and crisp."

  I agree! Flashy doesn't always sell better. Yes, you need good copywriting and a design that's not too distracting, but still looks professional enough to show that you care about your business and its image.

  So you need to master a good and converting sales letter or copy. You can hire someone to do this for you.

Have you decided what are you going to sell?

There are many good templates around if you just do a search in Google. But if you prefer one of a kind, why not outsource to a web designer like in designcrowd to come out a truely one of a kind sites for you.

I tend to disagree that ugly works best... more and more studies are coming out that reveal how big of an impact design actually has on conversions. It's definitely important to have a nice template for your sales page.

I know Lead Pages has some great templates that are easy to use if you don't know anything about html or javascript or all that programming stuff

Are you looking for static html or something that's dynamic and plugs into Wordpress, for example?

I think design is over-rated. Well-written copy, and great images and videos is what makes things sell. A fancy design is just distracting eye-candy and may hurt sales. Keep the background neutral and make the words and images pop.

You do not need a good looking site to do well, but you will do better if it is good looking. A good looking site mixed with great ad copy is going to have big impact on sales.
